Its another quiet night outside the house. Not a sound can be heard throughout the darkened street. But, inside the house, a slamming door shatters the silence, the force causing the house to rock as John storms into the bedroom in the search of his wife, Miriam. The walls are still quivering as a new tremor shoots through them. This time its Johns voice as he bellows for his wife. He finds her cowering behind a chair.

He grabs the chair and beats her with it, hitting her again and again while she screams in pain. The neighbors all wince involuntarily as the dull thuds of the chair pounding her body and the terrified shrieks pierce through the walls of their houses and they silently thank the Lord that they arent going through the same thing. Yet, no one tries to stop anything. Its been labeled an inside affair so it continues to be just an average night at the Johnson house. But you have to wonder: what went wrong? What is the difference in this man and woman that causes this to be a normal occurrence at their house?

Probably the most asked question ever from people about this situation is what went wrong? Sometimes it comes from the batterer, wondering what turned him into this monster. Or it could come from the victim, wondering what he / she is doing to deserve the pummeling fists that constantly rain down on them. Even the people that arent involved so closely, the ones that cant understand why the couple is always fighting but leave it to their business, even they want to know what happened to loving couple they used to see. Everyone tries to analyze what went wrong.

Unfortunately, the answers to their questions arent simple. This abuse could have come from anywhere. Maybe John started out as a jealous boyfriend that wanted to make sure his girlfriend didnt look at anyone but him or that wanted to feel like he was in control, that he held the power. It could have come from the men in his life that he had always looked up to. If they showed him this physical and mental thrashing of others was okay, then he would be in the mindset to think they were right. A survey of men in Maryland treatment programs shows that 75 % of the batterers had parents who were abused and 50 % had been abused themselves (Ibelle 2).

For some, their culture says its okay and they use it as a way to punish their wives or they live in a patriarchal society that oppresses women. Sometimes its caused by a lowered self worth such as low income, unemployment, or alcohol and substance abuse (Gelles 3). Batterers often justify their actions so much that they no longer see it as their problem or even a problem at all. They portray themselves as the victim or state they lost control (Ibelle 3).

People are also beginning to feel that some athletes may be more violent because it encourages kids to use violence and teaches them its okay (Gongola 1). Many popular sports figures are abusers. Among them are Warren Moon, Barry Bonds, O. J.

Simpson, Fitzpatrick, Scottie Pippen, Marcus Moore, Johnson, and Mike Tyson. As you can see, these beatings are not limited to one sport and a very small number of these men actually received any noticeable punishment. One reason for the sports trend may be they feel threatened by the amount of women in sports now after feeling it was their one place they could be completely male-dominant so they strike back in their own homes to show they are in control. Some think they wont get caught because they are such prominent figures and some hit their wives and girlfriends if they find themselves caught in a lie, especially if they are cheating, so they think if they beat them hard enough, theyll be too afraid to say anything. A few actually enjoy the feeling of beating women. Mike Tyson, a well-known boxer, is one of those people.

After being accused of a few accounts of domestic violence, he was reported as saying: I like to hurt women when I make love to them I like to hear them scream with pain, to see them bleed It gives me pleasure (Nack and Munson 66). Now, I want to know, what is going through his head when the sight of a half-dead person makes him happy And why is he still out where he can hurt people When social figures like him do something like this and get away with it, it shows others that this kind of behavior is okay. Why do we let these people get away with it? The fact is, we dont really have a choice. Because of their social standing, people like Mike Tyson can get away with something like beating a woman. The women often dont press charges because theyre afraid their husbands might hurt them more, they have been convinced its their fault, or other factors, such as economic, interpersonal, cultural, and social problems so the police cant arrest anyone.

Plus, abusive people usually have an amazing ability to put on an act (Marano 58). Batterers are often very respectable, even charming people (Ibelle 4). Even if women do press charges, the men might still get away with it because they make it impossible to believe what the women say against them. Also, there are some instances where a batterer may abuse his children and no one believes or listens to them because they just cant fathom it being true. Sometimes their charm works to bring the women back. They promise to act better and pretend to be very sorry so the women return (Marano 60).

But, by the time the women realize it wasnt true it might be too late. In 1996, more than 1300 women were killed by their husbands or boyfriends, in the United States alone, where abuse is illegal (Gelles 2). Lack of facilities, boyfriends / husbands that wont let them leave, fear of worse pain in the future, the belief that the end of a relationship is their own failure, or the inability to support themselves without their husbands money prevents victims from leaving violent relationships. These people who are dependent on their husbands learn to endure the situation and remain in the situation in hopes that their partner will change (Gelles 1).

Also, those that have kids fear that their husband or boyfriend will gain custody of the children. Studies show that 70 % of women who leave have husbands who gained custody (Marano 60). Do you realize how many people live in situation where they are being abused by a husband / boyfriend ? In a study done by the U.

S. Department of Justice, it was found that there were about 840, 000 non-lethal incidents of violence committed by an intimate partner in 1996 (Gelles 2). That is a staggeringly high number but it is considered to be inaccurately low because of the people that dont say anything. What is being done to prevent this? There are many programs that now exist in order to treat and prevent domestic violence.

There are about 1800 shelters for victims in the U. S. today. At these shelters, victims can receive legal assistance, counseling for themselves and their children, referral to other treatment programs, and other services. Treatment programs for the batterers have also been established to teach the batterers the right things to do, how they should see women, and how to deal with their own problems. Domestic violence has become illegal in all 50 states to make it easier for victims to get restraining orders and allows officers to arrest people suspected of committing domestic violence without the victim filing charges (Gelles 1).

Some individuals are fighting back personally to help people better understand domestic abuse (Marano 56). In 1994, the Violence Against Women Act was passed to give more than $ 800 million in federal funds to state and local programs for the reduction of domestic violence. A few programs and policies attempt to prevent violence before it starts but the most widespread prevention programs are awareness campaigns that identify intimate violence as an important social problem (Gelles 2). Suddenly, its over. The anger inside of John has sizzled down and he realizes what hes done. Feeling deeply ashamed, he quickly covers up his actions by blaming her for?

pushing his buttons? when he was angry. Only, this time there is no sigh of relief or apology or any sound at all. Then he realizes the limp body hes looking down on is dead.

He went too far this time. No one ever tried to warn him and now he sits there bawling over his Miriam's lifeless body. He promises to himself that hell never do it again but knows nothing he says or does now can help him. He killed his wife. Maybe now hell get what he deserves, youre thinking now. Maybe theyll finally put this monster behind bars.

But maybe they wont. And what about Miriam, did she deserve to die to finally have peace? Was it her fault for not speaking up sooner? Or was it the neighbors? fault for not helping her? The neighbors wonder why they didnt speak up before it was too late and John tries to figure out what he did wrong that caused this terrible situation.

These are the questions they should have been asking before Miriam died. Unfortunately, its not until something like this happens that people start asking the right questions. While its happening, everyone looks the other direction, not wanting to stick their noses in someone elses personal life. But when someone gets tragically hurt or even dies, thats when they realize they should have paid more attention; but then its too late. So, instead of asking what went wrong, ask what you can do to help.

You might be saving someones life.
