Movies were only a dime, but we didnt have a dime. In Labor, North Dakota not much went on. Aileen Muir was born on Dec 12, 1916. Her father, Gale Muir, was a carpenter who made enough to get by and support his family. When the thirties came, jobs became hard for Gale to find. He always had work.

It was just scarce. When Roosevelt started WPA, Gale was the head of a group hired to build sidewalks. He was paid fifty-four dollars a month while the other workers made forty. Times were hard, but we always ate.

Most of the food we grew ourselves. We had potatoes, tomatoes, carrots and other veggies. My dad built water canals to the plants and he used to pump the water by hand. Unlike a lot of families, Aileen had meats to eat. Some came from their own animals, but every winter her dad would buy meat which would last the winter. The girls used to wear dresses and the boys wore overalls.

We only lived a little way from school so we didnt have to walk that far. I was fortunate. I never had to give up school. Our neighbors, the Tanners, had two boys who couldnt go to school because they had to work on the farm. Aileen's mother Bessie would make all the childrens clothes.

She would reuse old material to save money. We wore the same clothes all week, and saved our best clothes to wear to church. The only time we spent money was if we had to, but at Christmas people would spent a little more. GRANDMOTHER EDNA 1929 When the banks closed and my father lost his money, he had two concerns. He had written two checks; one was to pay for the new indoor plumbing and the other was to pay the hospital for my birth. He was really glad when the checks didnt bounce.

He didnt want to be poor and in dept. Edna grew up about ten miles outside of Plant City, Florida, a small farming town. Her father, Dan Morris, was farmer who grew corn and oranges. He also raised hogs and cattle which he sold and let the family eat. "A lot of what we ate came from the farm, but for the other things we were able to trade the grocer what we produced, and he would give us other groceries. Every weekend my father would go into town and sell produce at the farmers market. To take care of all the land, Dan had families who would live in two tenement houses on the property.

They would help harvest. We had about twenty acres of crops. My dad was poor, but his help was even poorer. My dad was a hard worker. One thing he passed on to me was a love and appreciation for work. GRANDFATHER RODGER 1924 My two Grandfathers and my dad lost their money when the banks closed.

Roger Erickson grew up in Kingsburg, California. My dad was the manager of the fruit packing house in Kingsburg. When he lost his job because the company was down sizing, he couldnt make the house payment. We had to move into a rental unit. My dad was very lucky to find a part time job at the Kingsburg Chamber of Commence. We always ate.

I remember eating simple things like macaroni. We didnt eat much meat, but I was never hungry. You eat to satisfy, and always eat what you take. Rodger never had to go to work; he was young and able to stay in school. The farms around Kingsburg had trouble of their own.

Prices were low for crops and there was an abundance of workers pushing west. I remember there was quite a lot of animosity towards the okie's. They came in their rickety old trucks and would work for low wages; you cant blame them though. At one time they tried to stop them at the boarder, but that was illegal. I have three relatives that are close to me and have lived through the depression.

To get the widest experiences of the depression, I interviewed them all. I was also afraid that there might be a jealousy factor. I interviewed all three over the phone and in the middle of asking Aileen questions, she said you have it easy. I replied I know, but then I thought about it a bit and I really dont know. The only way a could know is if I could experienced both perspectives. I could hear every story of the depression and still not really understand.

There is no way I can understand how easy my life is compared to those who lived through the depression. In doing this assignment I leaned one thing. People who have lived through the depression understand something that no other generation can. I can try to explain what they understand, but it doesnt do justice to their comprehension. They understand that work is something that is wonderful. My grandmother loves to work.

She knows that it is better to have work than not. The three interviewees dont need a lot of things because they have lived without them before. Once you have been at the bottom, everything looks better. My Grandfather, who is a wealthy man, accomplished this from being careful with his money. He still holds the same philosophy on eating. He says that, eating is to satisfy.

He says that you should never eat too much. This means that if you arent comfortable dont eat. I never listen to this, and I will often eat so much that I cant move. My grandfather grew up when it was too expensive to eat a lot. He understands food better than I do.

From these interviews I now understand my elders a little better and how their experiences with being poor have shaped their lives. I can see the advantages to being poor at some point in your life, but I would still like to avoid it. It is sad, but as this generation passes on so will their mentality of life, and our world will lose so much.
