Planet Earth: Fate of The Earth was a powerful, informative, and inspirational documentary. The narrator, Richard Kiley, progressed through many points about our precious earth including her beginnings, her slow deterioration by man as well as other factors, and theories as to her what could be her end. The beginning images of earth, approximately four million years ago, can be described a barren yet fertile land with the prospect for life to flourish. Prehistoric volcanoes exploded with gases and lava, that created the crust of our land.

Eventually the gases cooled and it began to rain, eventually forming the oceans that is the birthplace of life. Biologist Prof. December believes that seashores are the cradles of life that led to the evolution of organisms on to the land. In his experiment, he placed lipid molecules in a pool of water. He observed that when lipids come into contact with water their outside walls harden and form mobile structures. Found in Australia were rocks about a billion years older than previously believed, 3. 5 billion years.

In the rocks were found micron-sized films and tiny bacteria whose ancestors are alive today. In coastal waters are mushroom shaped structures that were created by photosynthetic blue-green algae communities, that also converted carbon dioxide molecules to oxygen. Oxygen being the Atmospheric chemist Jim Lovelock proposes the Gaya theory which states that earth herself is maintained by life. Supporting evidence for this is that when daisies are in bloom the earths temperature cools, preventing the earth from heating up and becoming a barren land like it once used to be.

The rain forests in South America are of great importance. They hold 40 % of all living organisms. But at the killing rate of 3, 000 acres per hour, they will soon vanish. The land is stripped of its gems and used to graze cattle and other animals for our ever-growing, hungry species.

But after five years of use, grass can no longer grow because of the lack of soil nutrients and the land goes to waste. The rain forest itself is an ingenious creature. It creates its own weather system. It rains quite frequently their and when the rain evaporates, they form rain clouds which will once again bear down upon the earth with rain, forming an infinite cycle. The rain forests holds many unknown species of plants that can unlock the secret in combating diseases. We can say that we are killing ourselves.

We are destroying the rain forests that hold and support the essence of our earth. We are polluting the oceans in which life was created and continues to create. Our new destructor: nuclear power. In 1953 American men went to islands in the west Pacific to carry out a mission: the testing of the hydrogen bomb, Operation Ivy. These islands are virgin and serene with billions of years of coral life built upon itself in order, beauty, and harmony. The bombs created craters a mile wide, that are still visible today.

Forty-seven islands diminished to forty-five. Now thirty years later there is less varied life because of all the radioactive waste. In 1954 Americans set out gain to test their hydrogen bombs at the Bikini Island Atolls. Again life was destroyed.

But in this incident, nearby Japanese fishermen were well within the radiation area and were contaminated by the ash. Global outrage demanded the stop of nuclear testing and won the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. What if the nuclear countries around the world were involved in an intense conflict and decided the nuke each other? What would then happen to all the innocent lives (as well as non-human) of the world? The Nuclear Winter theory answers these questions. Hydrogen bombs would explode and create thick smoke smothering the sky.

Sunlight could not enter the earths atmosphere, depleting our ecosystem of the nutrients in needs in order to survive. Firestorms would rage and life would die. Day would become eerie twilight and warmth would slowly fall to freezing temperatures. Snow and Too many factors are eating away at our earths fragile ecosystem.

Once again the earth will become the barren wasteland that it began as. And to think that life that grew from the earth, is now destroying her. Bibliography:
