The whole of my remaining realizable estate shall be dealt with in the following way: the capital, invested in safe securities by my executors, shall constitute a fund, the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. The said interest shall be divided into five equal parts, which shall be apportioned as follows: one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery or invention within the field of physics; one part to the person who shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction; and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses. The prizes for physics and chemistry shall be awarded by the Swedish Academy of Sciences; that for physiological or medicinal work by the Caroline Institute in Stockholm; that for literature by the Academy in Stockholm, and that for champions of peace by a committee of five persons to be elected by the Norwegian Storting. It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration whatever shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be a Scandinavian or not. Based on the exact words of Alfred Nobel's will, the Nobel Prize Foundation was established in 1900. Alfred Nobel was born in Stockholm on October 21, 1883.

His father Immanuel Nobel built bridges in Stockholm, and was an engineer and inventor. At the time of Alfred's birth, Immanuel had to go into bankruptcy due to misfortunes in his construction work. In 1837, Immanuel left his family and Stockholm to start a new career in Finland and Russia. To support the family that was left, Andrietta Nobel, Alfred's mother, started a grocery store that provided a modest family income. Meanwhile, Immanuel had become successful in St. Petersburg, Russia, by starting a mechanical workshop, which provided equipment for the Russian army and also provided naval mines that could be used to block enemy ships from threatening the city.

Being successful in his ventures in Russia, he was able in 1942 to bring his family to St. Petersburg. While there, he was able to put his sons through a first class education. By the time Alfred was 17 he was fluent in Swedish, Russian, French, English and German.

Alfred took up interests in English literature and poetry, which Alfred's father did not approve of. In order to widen Alfred's horizons, Immanuel sent abroad for further training in chemical engineering. For a two-year period, Alfred visited Sweden, Germany, France and the United States. In Paris, his favorite of all the cities he visited, he met the young Italian chemist Ascanio Sombrero who, three years prior to meeting Alfred, had invented nitroglycerine, a highly explosive liquid. It was considered far to dangerous to serve any practical purposes. Alfred became heavily intrigued with the substance, and was determined to put it to use.

In 1852 he was asked to come back and work in the family business, which was booming because of his fathers contributions to the Russian Army. Along side of his father, they worked together to perform experiments to make nitroglycerine a useable explosive. After Alfred's return to Sweden in 1863, he was convinced to continue trying to find a way to make nitroglycerine function as an everyday explosive. Several of the test explosions, including one in 1864 which took his brothers life along with others, convinced the local authorities that the nitroglycerine production was far to dangerous. They outlawed further experiments within the Stockholm city limits and Alfred had to move his experiments. Not discouraged one bit, he continued his work.

He soon found that mixing the nitroglycerine with silica would turn the liquid into a paste that could be shaped into rods that were suitable for fitting into drilling holes. He patented this under the name of dynamite in 1867, and thus began his wealth. He continued to work on other projects and by the time of his death in 1896 he had 355 patents. It is said that he created the awards to make up for his invention. Although dynamite serves many practical purposes, it has also served as a gateway that is used in current wartime's, and has caused the loss of many lives. Regardless of that, Alfred Nobel is the founder of the Nobel Foundation, and his contributions to society spread far and wide.

In this paper I will be going into detail the recipients of the award for the years 1900 - 1910 and describing why the have won the award, and comparing it with the recipients of the awards from 1991 - 2001. In 1901, the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to Rene Francois Armand Prudhomme, known in short as Sully. Sully was born in 1839, the son of a French shopkeeper. Throughout his childhood Sully had the desire to become an engineer, but an early eye disease ended his studies at a polytechnic institute. After his dreams were shattered, he started to study literature. After a very short unsuccessful venture into industry, Sully entered into the world of law.

He worked in a solicitors office, but with no passion whatsoever. Sully Prudhomme became a member of the Conference La Bruce, which is a distinguished student society. In this select society, his fellow members were overwhelmed with the quality of his first works, and they further encouraged him to continue writing poetry. The first volume of his poems, Stances et Poms, received a very good review by the Sainte-Beuve and this established his reputation in the world of literature. Through his translation of the first book of Lucretius De Rerum Natura, he showed his personal standard for formal perfection and beautiful style through his interests in philosophy and the sciences. It took five volumes to form a collected edition of his writings in 1900 - 1901.

Sully was a member of the French Academy from 1881 until his death in 1907. In the first year of the Nobel Prize for literature, there were many complications involved with awarding the prize. Sully Prudhomme has an introvert nature as sensitive as it is delicate. His poetry is rarely concerned with images and exterior situations as such, but principally with the extent to which they can serve as a mirror of poetic contemplation.

Sully's poetry wastes no time in getting to the point. Every word is written with an intended purpose, and it is clear as to what purpose it serves. He would commonly write about his love of the spiritual or his doubts and sorrows. His words flow together beautifully as to create a lyrical river that flows through the mind, activating each one of the senses to create an entire body experience. His poetry avoids creating melodious music, but rather creates exuberant colors that activate the mind. The Nobel Committee felt it necessary to give the award to Sully because he was viewed as one of the major poets of the time, and that some of his poems are pearls of imperishable value.

Through his works, he seems to posses an almost all-knowing spirit, containing no flaws in his logic or reason, and through his analysis of man, he conveys an almost god-like aura. A hard act to follow, but regardless the award was given out the next year, 1902, to Christian Matthias Theodor Mommsen. Mommsen was regarded as possibly one of the greatest classical historians of the nineteenth century. Born in 1817 in Garden, Schleswig, he was the son of a Protestant minister. At the age of 21 he began studying law and classics at Kiel until 1843. After a few years in France and then Italy, and after a short career in journalism, he began teaching law at the University of Leipzig.

In 1850, he was dismissed on the grounds of being involved in the revolution that took place for two years before. He then moved to teaching at the universities of Zrich and Breslau. In 1858, he was appointed the chair of Ancient History at the University of Berlin. He became permanent secretary of the Prussian Academy of Arts and Sciences. During the seventies, Mommsen became an active and prominent member of the Prussian Parliament, initially he was a National Liberal and later he progressed to become a Liberal.

In a bibliography whose dates go up to 1887, it is listed that Mommsen's writing totaled over 900. Through these writings, he revolutionized the study of Roman history. He was the general editor of, and chief contributor to, the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, which is a gigantic collection of Roman inscriptions that was published by the Berlin Academy (1867 - 1959). This work has laid down what is now the foundation for a systematic study of Roman government, administration, economics, and finance. Mommsen wrote books from everything regarding Roman coinage to Roman constitutional and criminal law. His works remain classics in their respective fields.

Besides from being a brilliant scholar with a beautiful grasp for detail and a talent for organization, he was one of the greatest writers of our time. His involvement in the revolution of 1848 - 1849 influenced his point of view on his main work, the incomplete Rmische Geschichte [History of Rome]. His condemnation of the weakling Cicero, as well as his admiration of Julius Caesar for his statesmanship and energy, dominated the standard view of the history of that era. He managed to complete the history of the Roman Republic, but he only got to plan a history of the Empire, a writing that would have probably been regarded as one of the greatest historical writings of all time. Theodor Mommsen died in 1903. It took the proposal of 18 members of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences to choose Mommsen amongst all of the brilliant names that were suggested.

Known mostly for his Rman Geschichte, distinguished by its active style and thorough a...
