Recent studies show that North Americans have more televisions than bathrooms in their homes. Television is a part of everyones life, even if you dont watch it you are surrounded by those who do. Due to this large audience, this form of media can help shape societal development, while enjoying their favorite television shows people unknowingly absorb the political, social and economic messages that are assumed in the program. Television is a tool that can be used for both bad and good, it can be used to educate and allow people to see a world they might never have a chance to see in reality.

However, television shows a small, distorted view of reality, which can damage peoples views of the real world, and this can influence how people think and behave. To understand how television influences society we must first understand how society affects individuals. Through a process of socialization, everyone will learn how to behave in society by observing the behavior of others. Before television children relied on close groups of family and peer groups to learn the art of socialization. Now however mass media allows millions of people to share a variety of identical experiences, through television we can observe how successful people behave and we assume that this is the proper way to behave in the real world.

Those who tell stories hold the power in society. Today television tells most of the stories to most of the people most of the time - George Gerber Television is the most realistic medium of communication available, what you see and hear seems a lot like what you experience in real life, because of this it is easy to assume what we see in the media is reality. When we spend so much time watching fictional characters in fictional situations, our view of normal behavior may be distorted. People on television are often stereotyped and falsely depict the reality of the people in the real world. Most of the characters are handsome males, who are intelligent, educated and well employed.

However women are tending to be portrayed as unemployed and dependent on a man in a mother type role. This stereotypical portrayal of the sexes influences how people perceive these gender roles in todays society. Minorities are often depicted as lower class, poor, and often victims in some sort of way. Television representation of economic classes is very disproportionate in comparison with the situation in contemporary North America. Most employed people on television have jobs with high income and high social prestige such as doctors and lawyers, in reality the largest portion of North Americas work force are blue collar workers such as factory workers. Many people watch the news on television to learn about the activities around the world, but can we believe this portrayal of the global events?

The camera cannot capture the whole picture, only a small portion of what is happening in the world, yet people rely on these shows to educate them about the world we are living in. Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see - Proverb What are the consequences of this misrepresentation of society? We make assumptions about people, places and things of fictional sitcoms, soap operas and dramas. Peoples view of the real world will be influenced with what they see on television, and they will modify their behavior to conform to what they believe are the successful, normal lives of the characters on television.

People will willingly watch a show designed for them 95 % of the time and will imitate someone on television as readily as they will imitate a live person - Parke and Kavanaugh People strive to be as beautiful and intelligent and successful as their favorite TV characters, this of course is impossible, as these lives are false. This desire to achieve this perfect TV life often leaves viewers feeling disappointed and with low self-esteem. This affect also is increasingly true for children; they believe most of what they see on television is true to life. Since these children spend a considerable amount of time watching television this makes them particularly vulnerable to the negative affects of it. A very important concern of the North American public is the effect of television violence on people in society. During prime time a violent incident occurs five times every hour.

Due to this amount of violence in entertainment, we are forced to see brutal acts of violent behavior often, which in turn desensitizes us to these acts. It can be argued that this is purely for entertainment value, and that people can tell the difference between fantasy and reality. However one group that is greatly influences from media violence is children. Through the news, movies and Saturday morning cartoon, children are exposed to a wide variety of types of violence and this has been proven to affect their behavior and their attitudes towards this type of behavior. There is overwhelming evidence that excessive violence on television causes violent behavior in children. Watching violence on television is the single factor most associated with aggressive behavior even more than poverty, race or parental behavior. - Dr.

Leonard Error and Dr. Rowell Huesmann Since the birth of television, crime has skyrocketed, students now fear for their lives in America where schools have turned into war zones with school shootings occurring more often, many attribute this problem to violence children watch on television. Children who have been exposed to large amounts of television violence have been proven to have more violent tendencies and are more likely to resolve conflicts through physical violence. These children will more willingly accept aggressive behaviour in others and may make children more fearful as they come to believe that violence is as common in the real world as it is on television.

This is also true for the portrayal of sex on television. Sex on television will provide children with early and easy access to information that used to be reserved for adults. Sex is glorified and an unreal world is created where sex has enhanced importance. Sex is often portrayed without pain or consequences, children and teens do not have a real understanding of the issue. However, televisions portrayal of society does not necessarily have a negative effect, it can be used to teach lessons in morals and produce admirable role models for children to look up to. Television shows depict a mostly good view of morals, there is violence but the good guys always win.

Hard work, perseverance, courage and kindness are usually depicted as admirable and desirable traits. Parents are usually shown as loving and children are shown as respecting towards their parents. All these subtle lessons will allow children to pick them up and practice them later in life. Television is an excellent educational instrument, it can teach lessons in everything from geography to mathematics.

Schools often use television as a way of educating students because on television, they can demonstrate many things that cannot be done in the classroom. Television also enforces better health attitudes to children, it promotes the penalties of drinking and driving and encourages children not to smoke or do drugs in a variety of campaigns. However it contradicts itself by glorifying things such as drugs and violence in prime time shows. Television is the most powerful teaching tool, unfortunately in most cases it has not been intended to teach and therefore its lessons are sometimes misleading and damaging. More than anything television, for most people, is an escape from reality in a fantasy land of sitcoms and game shows. Its aim is to entertain people, whether that is by educating them, making them laugh, or making them cry.

Through television people can fulfill their desires, it can take viewers across time and space, to witness a vast amount of experiences they would not usually have the opportunity go through. Television offers a way to explore the world and life without actually traveling; it can be a window to a world that many people could never witness in reality. Television is a machine to manufacture reassurance for troubled North Americans. Reassurance is part of the entertainment, the objective is to disconnect the audience from uncomfortable realities of life and to lull them on a sea of gentle inconsequence and then to sell them deodorant - Robert MacNeil Television today is considered to be the most important and most respected form of transmitting information.

Its easy accessibility means that it has the largest audience of all forms of media and therefore the greatest impact. There is no denying that what happens on TV influences people in society, what we must try to determine is to what extent. However the answer is hard to grasp because individuals, society and television as a mass medium are changing constantly. Television has the potential for both good and bad effects, but it does not act alone, society itself remains far more influential over the development and behavior of individual human beings.
