... is sisters. They all gave up the struggle of life at a very early age. The tombstones look like bodies and Pip imagines them as: born on their backs hands in their trouser pockets, not take out of this existence. The imagery in relation to Magwitch again helps to emphasize death. The convict intimidates Pip and threatens to kill him if he does not follow instructions.

Magwitch also describes another convict who has also escaped. Magwitch threatens to kill Pip if his orders are not followed precisely. At the end of the chapter when Magwitch leaves, the final imagery: 'he looked in my young eyes as if he were eluding the hands of the dead people. This leaves the reader with a resonating image in their heads of death.

Magwitch is very cruel to Pip, he places him on a gravestone: after each question he tilted me over a little more, as so to give me a sense of helplessness and danger. This cruelty can be linked directly to fear. Magwitch's pitiless behaviour towards Pip, it makes Pip obey his every commands. The drive from Magwitch's cruelty, which has heightened Pips fear, makes Pip risk getting a beating in order to bring Magwitch food in a later chapter. Mystery is a big part of the action in the first chapter. The description of the landscape adds mystery to the scene right from the beginning.

He describes the marsh country to be a dark and wild. This adds mystery to the story as anything could happen in this type of area. Magwitch is another addition to the mystery angle. He is all alone out in this wilderness. He appears behind Pip and startles him almost to tears.

His appearance also strikes mystery into the reader. It makes us wonder how he managed to get into that state. It also helps to set the scene and suspense for later action in the novel. Poverty is shown mainly by Pip as he lives with a blacksmith, and that is a low income profession. Poverty is also demonstrated in the fact that they lived in a small marsh area. Pips family is no where near the big city or near any important high powered jobs.

He lives in a small village, where services are limited and primitive. Steinbeck and Dickens are clearly setting up a different kind of story when they write their first paragraphs. In Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck is writing about experiences during the Great Depression. He used to work on a farm to support him through college.

Steinbeck is writing about the life of migrant workers who are struggling for survival with the American Dream leading them. This story is about solid friendships, and the loneliness of people having to travel from their homes. George puts up with Lennie throughout the book, and Lennie looks up to George as a parental figure. This kind of relationship is the main theme of the book. Conversely, Dickens has written a book about a life of a person called Pip in nineteenth century England. Dickens is writing this book from an impartial view of modern life.

This is completely the opposite way he actually presents his book. His view is third person but he write in first person view. It is the same opposite for Steinbeck, because Steinbeck has experienced the Depression and the migrant work but he writes from a third person view. Dickens writes about how Pip is alone in this world, without his family except his sister who is married.

Unlike in Of Mice and Men, Pip actually gets to live his dream of becoming a gentleman. This unfortunately has the repercussion that he tries to forget his past. In Steinbeck's novel friendships, become solid through tough times. In contrast, in Dickens novel Pip breaks friendships with his lifelong friends. He tries to forget where he came from. Both of these introduction s are written in very vivid styles unique to the authors and their times.

In Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, I enjoyed the description of the landscape. I felt that this was really well done because in my mind I could picture every detail of the area with precision. In great expectations, I like the way dickens has used first person view to draw the reader straight into the story from the first line. This is a flaw with Steinbeck's novel is that the description, albeit it is of a very high quality, it does not draw the reader in as quickly. It is not for at least half to three quarters of the chapter until we actually hear of some excitement, which happened earlier, and the possibility of trouble in later chapter. With dickens novel, he draws us in very early, and keeps the readers attention, directly from the start.

Once he has our attention, he introduces a convict, which adds danger, and suspense to an already emotionally charged scene. I feel that both authors develop their characters well as you sympathize and feel the characters emotions. I like the way that Dickens provides a duel tactic of describing the characters and location. Instead of having a long piece of text on the location, integrates the description into the story subtlety.

When he is using Pip to describe things, we get an impassive view of the facts from the adult narrator, with facts and descriptions, and then Dickens uses Pips speech to insert human feelings to the facts. This helps me and other readers to digest the full emotion extent to the area and interaction between Pip and Magwitch. In conclusion I enjoyed both novels as they both open up the worlds the writers experienced or witnessed. It is possible to gain a deeper understanding of the problems faced by the people of those times. It is easy to dismiss a text by its first chapter, but both authors develop their introduction s so well that it helps to enhance the rest of the story and the readers imagination. It is a hard choice but I prefer Great Expectations, to Of Mice and Men.

I find that Dickens use of first person view is extremely effective and it sucks you into the story like a vortex. The introduction of real danger in the form of an escaped convict on a dark English moor is incredibly enjoyable to read. Of Mice and Men fails here because it only hints about future trouble and does not have any real action. Although this can be argued it is my personal opinion that Great Expectations by Charles Dickens has a much more enticing first chapter to Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
