After the war with Spain at Cuba, the United Stats realized that a faster route was necessary in order to deploy its warships from Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean. It was because the warships in Pacific Ocean had to take a detour around Cape Horn, which is located at the extreme South end of South America, in order to go to the sea area of Cuba. The total distance amounted to 224, 000 kilometers, and this great distance caused great amount of wasted time during the war. (web) Panama Canal was the result of the United States hard thinking. Despite all kinds of enormous difficulties, the Unites States built Panama Canal, for a specific military advantage, but it brought significant military and economic advantages to the United States. Panama Canal was first thought of by England. The United States perceived England's intensions.

In 1850, the United States made an agreement with England. First, the Agreement said that in order to construct a canal, which crosses Central America, they agreement said that in order to construct a canal, which crosses Central America, they should agree in advance. Second, they cannot convert the constructed canal into a military fort. The intention of the United States was to block England, but when England gave up on the idea of constructing the canal, the agreement in 1850 became a big block to the United States (Behind of Panama Canal, p. 163). At this time, England made a proposal. England was having hard battle in South America.

England proposed that the United States should be allied with it in exchange for allowing the United States to build a military fort in Panama. Because the United States did not have to involve in the war directly, it had no reason to refuse England's offer. As a result, in 1901, the United States made an agreement with England. The United States could build the canal independently, but the canal should be open to all countries equally. This agreement allowed the United States to build military fort in Panama.

The United States overcame the obstacle called England, but now Columbia, the real owner of the canal site, came as a new obstacle. The situation at that time was that Columbia gave the monopoly of constructing Panama Canal to Ferdinand Lesseps, who had build Suez canal. In 1990, he already undertook the construction of the canal with a French company. This company had all kinds of difficulties, such as corruption in management, defect in design, and harsh natural conditions. In these difficulties, thousands of workers died because of accidents and diseases, such as yellow fever and malaria. Therefore, they had to stop the construction.

They did not want to attempt again. The only hope was to sell the monopoly right to the United States. This French company asked 110, 000, 000 dollars, which at the time was an astronomical number. (History of America, p. 311) Because of this expensive price, the United States had to think of a 2 nd best way. Nicaragua canal was the result.

Nicaragua was father than Panama, but it was easier to dick there and it was closer to the American ports in Gulf of Mexico. The French company got worried because of the United States new plan. It offered the monopoly right at 40, 000, 000 dollars. (Dont know much about U. S history, p. 373) The United States government thought the price was reasonable and signed the purchase agreement. There was condition that Columbia should accept the agreement. And so, the United States started to talk with Columbia.

The United States asked land of 10 kilometers on both sides of the canal. It proposed 10, 000, 000 dollars at first and 2, 500, 000 dollars every year. (100 scenes of American History, p. 241) The negotiation team accepted this offer, and they made a provisional contract. But Columbian congress didnt approve the contract, because the contract between French company and Columbia did not end. Columbia thought that waiting until the end of contract with French company is better. President Roosevelt was angry, but there was no way to solve this problem.

But Columbia's political situation gave a good chance to the United States. In 1903, there was armed rebellion in Panama. The leader of the rebellion, Philippe Bureau-Varied, said, if the United States help independence of Panama, the United States would have no problem to construct the canal in Panama. The United States helped. The revolution was successful.

The United States approved Panamas independence. As a result, the United States could make better deal. The price was same as last time, 10, 000, 000 dollars, but the land increased from 10 kilometers to 15 kilometers (All Secret about U. S History, p. 273) The last obstacle was the natural conditions of Panama. From the beginning, the United States had troubles with difficulties that French Company had. But the United States tackled those problems better, because they knew that mosquitoes were the cause of yellow fever and malaria.

The plan to destroy mosquitoes accomplished a lot. It destroyed the yellow fever and malaria completely. If the United States had failed in this plan, it would have failed to construct the canal like Less s French company. In August 15, 1914, the ship Queen Elizabeth passed Panama Canal, 64 kilometers long, for the first time in history. (www. pana canal / english /firstS) It announced the completion of Panama Canal to the world. The canal was open to the ships from all of countries as agreed between England and the United States.

But no nation except the United States was allowed to use the canal for military purposes. The United States constructed strong forts around the canal. In 1917, the United States bought an island from Denmark for to protect the canal. In preparation for emergency situations, the United States secured a new site of the canal in Nicaragua and built a naval base nearby. Panama Canal, which constructed with many obstacles and steps, brought so many advantages to the United States.

The strategic significant of Panama Canal is an absolute thing in military. It brought the advantages in economic. The trade ships didnt have to detour to Cape Horn again for move from Pacific Ocean to Atlantic Ocean. Therefore, they moved to between those Oceans fast with cheap expense. Also, the ships from the other countries should pay for use the canal. Pay for using canal was better than a lot of time and much expense for detouring Cape Horn. (Behind of Panama Canal, p. 67) Therefore, so many ships are using the canal, and the United States gets another advantage from there.

Construction of Panama Canal had great significant. First, it connected between Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean. Second, the United States showed its strong strength of a nation to the world again. Its effort, time, skill, and fund were enough to show that. Third, the United States sea power in the Central America improved greatly with the canal. It showed Americas leading nation is the United States.

In Conclusion, the United States passed 3 obstacles for constructing Panama Canal. Those were England, Columbia, and natural condition of Panama. After complete to construct the canal, it gave great strategic and economic advantages, and it gave great significant. At that time, the important thing was to deploy warships into Atlantic Ocean as quickly as possible. The construction was for this purpose, but there were too many obstacles. The United States gained great advantages beyond initial goal of deploying warships by constructing Panama Canal.
