... e. Inability or disapproval to accept maturity is often a cause of characters loneliness. Holden is torn apart by two dominating forces in his life.

One pulls him into maturity, advising him to grow up and leave behind both his innocence and childhood, while the other does not want to free him from his past. For any human being, accomplishing these two things at once is an impossible task, and yet the protagonist presses on, attempting to do so anyway. Holden dreams of remaining as innocent as his beloved little brother Allie. Allie never had a chance to enter the adult world as he passed away from leukemia before becoming a teenager. For this reason, Allie is forever stored in Holden's mind as a perfect symbol of childhood innocence. "I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddamn windows with my fist, just for the hell of it.

I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it. It was a very stupid thing to do, I'll admit, but I hardly didn't even know I was doing it, and you didn't know Allie. " (CR 34) Holden's fear of loss of innocence can be seen as he reacts when his roommate, Ward Stradlater, announces he is going on a date with a good childhood friend, Jane Gallagher. As children, the two were close companions. Holden remembers their happy life together as children when playing checkers.

As with Allie, Holden also wants to preserve his image of her innocent childhood beauty. Thus, when Stradlater mentions he might "give her the time", Holden reacts with outrage: "I sat there for about a half hour after he left. I mean I just sat in my chair, not doing anything. I kept thinking about Jane, and about Stradlater having a date with her and all.

It made me so nervous I nearly went crazy. I already told you what a sexy bastard Stradlater was. " (CR 29) Although he wanted to say hello to Jane, who was waiting in the foyer just a walk down the stairs away, Holden is frightened by the thought that Jane would actually want to fulfill with Stradlater's sexual desires. This would mean a loss of innocence, and would destroy Holden's childhood memories of the "good times." Thus his fear that Jane is no longer sweet and innocent keeps him within his dorm. In refusing to face the fact that Jane might have entered adulthood, Holden also refuses to mature as a person. He becomes disgusted with the corrupted society around him. In his discussion with Mr.

Antolini, his old teacher explains to him: "Among other things, you " ll find that you " re not the first person who was ever confused and frightened and even sickened by human behavior. You " re by no means alone on that score, you " ll be excited and stimulated to know. Many, many men have been just as troubled morally and spiritually as you are right now... If you get along with [an academic education] any considerable distance, it " ll begin to give you an idea what size mind you have. What it " ll fit, and maybe, what it won't.

After a while, you " ll have an idea what kind of thoughts your particular size mind should be wearing... if you have something to offer, someone will learn from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. " (CR, 170 - 171) Through the wise advice of Mr. Antolini, Holden learns that the loss of innocence is the nature of the world and a part of growing up. His journey has brought him from innocence to knowledge, ignorance to perception, and isolation to connection. By becoming his own person, Holden will learn to grow and mature, finding a firm foothold in the world and accomplishing his goals and overcoming his isolation by connecting with his surroundings.

He will have a chance to talk with other intelligent individuals such as he who have the same problems in dealing with maturity. Sometimes Salinger's characters do not reach the point of hopeful development as Holden Caulfield did in The Catcher in the Rye. Some, such as Seymour Glass in Salinger's "A Perfect Day for Bananafish", become self destructive and eventually destroy themselves because they cannot come to terms with the inevitable process of the loss of innocence. As an adult, Seymour is drawn by the honesty, sincerity, and curiosity of young children such as Sybil. He admires the simplicity and directness of her actions and thoughts; he knows that she does not yet feel threatened enough by the world in order to begin to wear a protective mask to conceal her true thoughts and emotions. Her candid, frank, and lovable nature causes Seymour to spend days with her at the beach, conversing.

You just keep your eyes open for any banana fish. This is a perfect day for banana fish. ' 'I don't see any, 's sybil said. 'That's understandable. Their habits are very peculiar... They lead a very tragic life, ' he said, 'You know what they do, Sybil?' She shook her head. 'Well, they swim into a hole where there's a lot of bananas. They " re very ordinary looking fish when they swim in. But once they get in, they behave like pigs.

Why I've known some banana fish to swim into a banana hole and eat as many as seventy eight bananas! ... Naturally, after that they " re so fat they can't get out of the hole again. Can't fit through the door. ' 'Not too far out, 's sybil said. 'What happens to them?' 'What happens to who?' 'The banana fish. ' 'Oh, you mean after they eat so many bananas they can't get out of the banana hole?' 'Yes, 's aid Sybil. 'Well, I hate to tell you, Sybil. They die. ' 'Why?' asked Sybil. 'Well, they get banana fever. It's a terrible disease. Like Holden and Seymour, the younger members of the Glass family feel also lonely in the society, they cannot accept the society's corruption.

Materialism, egotism, and hypocrisy have turned them away from the world. In the world of phoniness and deception, Franny often has a hard time interacting with people who conceal their true feelings. Her boyfriend, Lane, plays the role of a pretender. [Lane] intentionally tried to empty his face of all expression that might quite simply, perhaps even beautifully, reveal how he felt about the arriving person. (FZ 7) Intelligent and sensitive, Franny is disheartened by the overall phoniness and egotistical nature of almost all the people in the world. In particular, the young...
