They way of life during the time period of THE BATTLE of MALDON was very different than the way we live today. In that day and age, violence played a huge role in social status of individuals as well as the society as a whole. The will and skill of Kingian non-violence would be met with laughter and disbelief. To the people living in this time period war was a way of life. The soldiers who fought, Eadwaeard, Aetheric, and Godric, among others, were honored for their bravery and willingness to sacrifice their own lives for their lords and their people. The soldiers would probably be bombarded with comments of cowardice had they tried to win a battle using non-violent methods.

Much like the sons of Old, who fled the battle, were deemed cowards by this poem. In a more modern society, people are still skeptical if non-violence is and effective way to bring about change and win battles. Can this controversy of violence and non-violence be solved by stating that, if the will and the skill are followed correctly and with enough determination, all conflicts can be solved using non-violent methods? I believe yes is the correct answer to this question. If the Anglo-Saxons had a set of principles and steps to follow they would not have lived such a violent way of life. More violence does not result in a non-violent situation.

A violent force might quiet a lesser force of violence, but it cannot create non-violence. Dr. Kings first principle states non-violence is the way of life for courageous people. It is a positive way to be rid of forces of injustice. During THE BATTLE of MALDON, violence was not necessarily used as a tool against injustice, rather it was a way to gain more land and provide better lives for the people behind the violence. The men who supported the violence, and fought the battles were looked up to as heroes and noble men of great courage.

Had society heard of Kings first principle these men may have been seen very differently. I think that this first principle of Dr. Kings is the keystone for the others. If this first principle had caught on, the other 5 principles would follow closely behind, and a system of non-violence would be feasible. The beloved community is the framework for the future. The Anglo-Saxons may have believed in this principle as they fought for the future of there own beloved communities.

The soldiers took over, but did not enslave the civilizations they conquered. Instead, they taxed the civilians, and used their soldiers to help conquer other civilizations. This routine would eventually create a strong framework for the future of the community as a whole. I do not believe it was evil that Byrhtnoths soldiers were fighting.

The battles were a way of life for the soldiers. Principle three opposes the actions of the characters. King believed that the none-violent approach helps one analyze the fundamental conditions, policies and practices of conflict, rather than reacting to ones opponents, or their personalities. A non-violent approach was not taken in theses battles, and I dont think the personalities of the opponents had much to do with why the battles took place. The soldiers had one thing on their minds during the battle, and that was to win. Edward, Aetheric and Godric were a few of the soldiers who accepted suffering for the sake of the cause, and in their case, the sake of their lord.

However, they did not completely abide by Kings fourth principle of accepting this suffering without retaliation. Retaliation played a major role for the cause. It was kill or be killed. Retaliate or be retaliated against. Byrhtnoths soldiers utilized internal violence of spirits as well as external and physical violence, in order to motivate themselves for battle. It is this violent attitude that keeps the soldiers on their toes and ready for battle.

Dr. King felt that the best thing to do was to avoid this internal violence Other things can be used to keep motivation levels high, violence is not one of them. The Skill followed by the people of Maldon was not used for non-violence. They were probably pretty lax about gathering information. Any information that was gathered was likely to be short term planning just before battle. However, I am almost positive the soldiers were very well educated in battle.

Personal commitment could resemble the soldiers loyalty to his lord, his willing to die avenging his lords death. Negotiation was represented by the Anglo-Saxons allowing the Vikings to cross the river before starting the battle. It was not a particularly smart move, but it was a small-scale negotiation nonetheless. Direct action was definitely taken in this conflict, as it was in many conflicts in that time period. Reconciliation can most closely be related to the defeat of the enemy.

In THE BATTLE of MALDON, there was no joint leadership to implement change. One power would prevail, and the other will be defeated. The characters of this poem all touched on the beliefs of Dr. Kings, even though they did not follow the will and the skill directly. Rather, it is my belief that they conformed to the inverse of the Kingian Non-violent method. Had this method been heard of in earlier time periods, the world may be very different today, and THE BATTLE of MALDON may never have taken place.
