I was very confused about the topic I was going to choose when I got to know about the project. At the beginning we decided to meet with some friends and make a play or something similar. At first I thought it was a great idea, but then I realized I wasnt so interest in doing that. I wanted to do something that really concerned me and was at the same time of my interest, a topic I would learn of. I had chosen Mr. McGough as a tutor so I decided to make of my Personal Project an art project.

I found the idea very interesting and we started working on my Project immediately. I started by doing a list of topics which I wanted to know about. I specially focused on topics that had to do with problems that the world is suffering, problems our society, the world community have to face. I found out about some topics that seemed really attractive, like homeless people, Racism and discrimination, destruction of the environment, women role in society and children of the street.

I saw all this different subjects very interesting. But there was one, that by reading about it, I found out it was a big problem which a almost didnt know anything about. This was racism or racial discrimination. I didnt know what this really meant. I only knew it was when somebody discriminates another because or their skin colour, black or white mainly, because of their language, culture, etc. I saw this as a very far away problem, but I realized this happens around us every day.

I had to focus on one little part of racism because there are many things related to it and it would have been very difficult to cover the whole theme. I decided to focus on racial discrimination because of skin colour, focusing mainly on black and white skin colour people. I started researching and reading about racism and I started concerning more and more about this problem. I found many interesting ways of researching for my project. First of all I made two surveys.

Were people from all ages, mainly teenagers, were given a couple of situations and they had a number of options to choose from for each situation. I was very surprised by these surveys, I noticed most teenagers prefer to act as they dont care, they prefer their companions think they are great, cool and fashion, than to help other people for example. Although its very common adolescents will react like this, I think this is a problem school and their own family should solve and work out. I also took into account peoples opinion on racism. Something a didnt expected to hear was that most people see racism as a very far away problem and they dont notice it can be found around them and most important sometimes in them.

I considered peoples opinion, personal experience and surveys as the most important part of my project, because this is a problem that surrounds us and as you can see people are not aware of this. I also researched on the Internet were I found a lot of information. I got to know of many sites that work to stop racism and ones that encourages it. I found about an organization called Youth Campaign which settled the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21 st.

This is an organization which brought up and international youth forum, first in Canada and more recently in Germany. This is a place were children from many different countries get together to share their ideas and personal experiences on racism. Many youth get together with the same idea, we are all different and unique but we have one thing in common we a part of a unique race, the human race. Like one youth mentioned in the forum: Lots of colours are much more beautiful than one colour standing alone.

Take a rainbow for example, with only one colour it would just be half a circle hanging around the sky, but a rainbow standing strong with many colours is a magnificent part of nature. Stand tall with your culture and remember who your are. I also got to know of another organization called Artist Against Racism, this is an organization were famous singer, painters, writers, etc. , get together to stop racism. I think this is a great idea because young people mainly, are inspired and usually pay more attention to famous people that are usually their heroes. So the idea of famous grown up people meeting together to work for an international problem its really interesting. Researching, reading and analysing racism, I got to know why people discriminated which I was really curious and anxious to know.

I didnt understand why they did it at the beginning, but then I found out. I also learned the ways in which a person can commit racism. For example in schools, kids refused to work or co-operate with other kids that speak another language or if they are black, or white depending the situation. They exclude this children making them have low-self esteem and sometimes making them loose their reason for living. Adolescents usually discriminate making fun of clothes, physical appearance form people of diverse cultural groups.

They use derogatory language and terms towards people form different groups. Teachers also discriminate having low expectations from this student and usually paying them less attention than to the rest... I read about a particular case. The story of a young African American girl who joined a class in a Catholic School in the middle of the year. She was nervous about being in the new school, not knowing anyone and trying to learn the routines everyone else had learned already. In addition, she was the only African American in the entire school.

The nun who taught thus particular class has lived through year of hateful and harmful discrimination. She was constantly belittling the African American girl to the point that the girl believed she was less of a student than the others in her class. But after an episode where the nun gets help from and African American family in times she needed that help, she noticed she had been wrongly judging people by the colour of their skin. I got to know of many similar cases, some ended happily, but some did not.

After reading all this information and the personal experience of many people from around he world, I noticed that by doing this project I would probably make people realize what our world is passing through. I decided that a written project was not going to give my message to people as I wanted to, words can be forgotten very easily. I had to do something that will really get to people. I realize that what really gets into peoples minds and is very difficult to forget are images. When you see something that calls your attention from the first moment, you dont forget it. So I decided to do a painting or a couple of them.

A painting which represents racism and most important that when you look at it you would say Oh my gosh, that really happens around us. That you realize that racism surrounds us and is part of our world. That when you look at the painting you realize that we are exposed to a world where we have become so separated and so selfish, that we are hurting each other. We are hurting people who share the same home with us, a unique home which is our world, THE EARTH. So the main idea is to make people realize about this problem of racism and that they can do something about it. The difficult part of the project was when I had to create the painting that would call peoples attention.

It is very difficult to show racism in a painting and that people notice Im trying to give a message. I decided to make a list of my feelings towards racism. This was how the list ended to be: Anger Sadness Lack of tolerance and ignorance Discomfort Harm Misery, etc Using this expressions and my knowledge of racism I created two paintings. So my conclusion about this project, after working so much on this topic, reading and analysing everything so I could to get to a good result, is that although we dont realize racism is something we can see in ourselves and in others every day.

But I think this can change if we really want to do something about it. I wish I could beat knowledge into all people, black or white to make them realize that one is not better than the other. I wish I could shout until I was blue in the face that we are all different, but that being different isn't wrong. I hate to think that in the year 2001 we still have to deal with such feelings of discrimination.

But still, somewhere in my heart, I await a day when we will all be accepted and educated enough to know that we are all equal. Only by avoiding racial discrimination, only by passing the word that everyone should help and by telling another person what I have told you, with all this small things we can make a big change. So remember whether you are English, French or Portuguese, you deserve love and respect, and one thing should always be kept in mind: a handshake is a greeting wherever you are, and a smile shows friendship in any language. So STOP RACISM, just treat other people the way you would like to be treated. The areas of interaction related to my project are the following ones: community service because Im trying to help people by making them realize racism surrounds us and that each of us can make a change, so I will be helping the victims and the ones who discriminate too. Homo Faber because racism is something humans have create, but this time not for their own benefit but against them.

A. T. L because through my project I have researched, analyzed, summarize and work a lot to get to my objective, that means to prove my hypothesis and create a good art project. Environment, because I am working and analyzing people from different countries and the situation in many parts of the world, which means different environments. Health and Social Education because racism is something that can be solved with social education, with just teaching young people that they shouldnt discriminate and helping them know more about this problem and health because although we dont realize racism can cause serious health problems.
