If someone is insecure, it means that he or she is not confident, not sure, unprotected, or unsafe. The feeling of insecurity often leads to a heightening of security in order to ease that feeling. This is not always beneficial and can lead to mishaps and misfortune. Security breeds insecurity.
A demonstration of this can been found in the stories The Masque of the Red Death and Once Upon a Time. In each story the heightening of security caused misfortune. Though the characters in the stories were attempting to create a secure environment, they made it hazardous because the security increase was too much too fast. The authority figure in each story took security procedures whenever he or she felt threatened by the outside world. In the story The Masque of the Red Death, the prince changed locations because he felt threatened. He took people into his castle in order to attempt to protect them and himself.
They resolved to leave means neither of ingress nor egress to the sudden impulses of despair or of frenzy from within. The abbey was amply provisioned. With such precautions the courtiers might bid defiance to contagion. The external world cold take care itself.
In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think. The prince had provided all the appliances of pleasure (Poe 701 - 702). He was trying to create a secure atmosphere. The prince had the castle secured so that no one could leave or enter into the kingdom by keeping the outside world outside.
The security procedures taken by the prince lead to misfortune in the kingdom. He took his relatives and friends into his castle but they were not allowed to leave and no one outside could enter. The people developed a feeling of imprisonment in the castle. The prince was trying to keep the plague from getting into the castle but his precautions failed. The plague was able to find its way into the castle and it led to the death of the prince. In the story Once Upon a Time, the boys parents installed security devices for protection, because they had fear of their house being invaded by the evils of the big city.
The alarms were not enough anymore because they were set off at all times of the day. The uselessness of the alarms caused a feel for a need of another form of security. The family decided to purchase a fence with weaponry type formations on the top of it as a form of security. The improvements made by the parents in Once Upon a Time were to keep the evils of the outside world from entering their home. The house and the swimming pool were not insurable against any damage from riots. There were riots outside the city.
The colored people lived outside the city and were only allowed in the city as housemaids and gardeners. The husband told his wife not to fear. She was afraid that these people would one day come into the city uninvited, ignoring the YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED sign on their gate. There were police and soldiers there to guard and protect them. The father pleased his wife by adding an electronically-controlled gate. If someone tried to open the gate, they would have to push a button and reveal their identity and their purpose (Gordimer 709).
By adding a security fence the parents felt that would solve the problem. The boy did not fully understand his parents intentions. He developed a feeling of imprisonment from the outside world. He wanted to explore outside the walls of his home. As a result of the boys curiosity he died. He was trying to get outside of the security fence that surrounded his house by climbing over.
He fell on one of the stakes on the fence top and in an instant the evils of the outside world were invited into the boys parents. In each story the security changes were made to make themselves safer but they resulted in misfortune. In my life I saw insecurity at my school. The precautions taken by the principle only developed insecurity in the school. The school hired a security guard in order to make the school campus safer.
He felt that the school needed more security other than burglar alarms. The security guard installed alarms and cameras throughout the school. He was on patrol most of the day. The constant watch of our campus built up a feeling of privacy violation. The increase of security caused people to dislike the school.
The security guard would do random bag searches and car searches. The principle hired him to help lower the crime and drug rate at our school. The heightening of security did not lower the illegal actions present in our school. Instead it led to a lot of false accusations and resulted in angry parents and students. I also had an insecurity problem in my life.
I built up walls around my heart and I would not let anyone into my life. I held all of my problems in between these walls. I wore a mask and seemed that I never had any problems. I have hurt myself because I never really opened up to anyone and let them see the true me. In each of these instances, there was an authority figure that was attempting to rid their territory of outside evils and create a secure atmosphere. Security is good but too much too fast will lead to mishaps.
