In nearly every science-fiction film ever produced, the pinnacle of excitement is always when a captain demands that the ship be shifted into warp drive. While the concept of warp drive may still not be developed in respect to todays vehicles, the concept is now applicable to the current worlds lightening swift advances in technology, communications and globalization as a whole. This is the pillar upon which Thomas L Friedman bases The World is Flat, in which Friedman explains his contention of the apparent flattening of the world in several interesting facets. Friedman discusses ten forces that flattened the world, some of which being the current trends toward outsourcing and off-shoring. Furthermore, Friedman examines the rapid economic and technological progress of eastern nations of the world, most notably India and China, while contrasting the increase in their abilities to compete in the global economy with Americas decreasing ability to do the same.

Friedman attributes this current decline to our waning emphasis on science and engineering, as well as our academic system as a whole. This is not the end of Americas dominance, however; there are several methods by which we may revise and thus improve our educational system. The world is flat: what was once solely available in America is now equally, and at times superiorly, available in other eastern nations. It used to be that students in eastern nations were pushed to succeed academically for the sole purpose of obtaining the opportunity to succeed in America. This is no longer the case; eastern nations now have the capability to literally breed and nurture students who ultimately become experts in the fields of science and engineering better than their American counterparts.

Friedman illustrates that this is a dramatic effect of our flattening world; the opportunities for such education are becoming rapidly available in several other parts of the world. The most significant cause for this flattening that is apparent is the dot com boom. The creation of the Internet is the most prominent reason for the world becoming flat. Friedman explains that while Americans were busy marveling at their new invention and the fact that the entire world is now connected, other countries began to take advantage of this powerful tool and have been rapidly progressing with its aid for the past ten years. Not only have other countries progressed, and continue to progress, but this is done all while Americas preparedness and future in engineering is continuously declining. Additionally, Friedman perfectly sums up our waning emphasis on science and engineering in the attitudes of Americas youth: In China today, Bill Gates is Britney Spears.

In American today, Britney Spears is Britney Spears and that is our problem (351). Friedman illustrates the importance of this issue when he declares that This is not a test (361). Moreover, he elaborates on Americas preparedness and future in engineering by explaining that the long-term opportunities and challenges that the apparent flattening of the world puts before us run rampant. Friedman continues to assert that we as a nation possess all the resources and talent necessary to continue to dominate the global economy for years to come, and although this statement is both true and accurate, this is not enough.

Our problems do not lie in the raw talent we have but rather in our interests of incubating this talent to its full potential. Without the ambition and leadership that we see in other prominent eastern nations, Americas engineering and science programs are doomed. The outlook of Americas future in science and engineering is not good. Our chances of remaining the dominant entity in these fields are steadily declining.

In order to reverse this trend, we must refocus our efforts towards three separate components of our society: leadership, ambition of the youth, and our education system as a whole. Our politicians and our leaders simply do not know how to deal with the current rise in technology; the ambition of our youth seems vacant, due in part not only to our parents but our culture as well; and our education system does not have a modern or practical way of producing skilled and creative engineers. We live in a society where our leaders care too much about their own personal images, as well as that of their opponents, to help solve this problem. Not only do politicians and leaders excessively care about making themselves look good and their opponents bad, but they are simply not doing what they should educating and explaining to people the world in which they live and exactly what they must do to prosper. Furthermore, it is not just a case of apathy and lack of interest, but a lack of knowledge as well. Our leaders simply do not have the slightest idea about the flattening of the world or the technology present.

Perhaps the breadth of the average politicians understanding of this can be summed up in a speech given by Senator Ted Stevens on June 28, 2006, wherein Stevens displayed his misunderstandings of Internet technology: I just the other day got... an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday And again, the Internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. Not only did Stevens mistakenly refer to an e-mail message as an internet, but he attempts to provide us with an easy understanding of the Internet, which had the opposite effect of showing America the he is simply uninformed, uneducated, and unable to be an effective force in the flat world. This is what must be changed; current politicians havent the slightest idea of how to handle todays world.

We need new, young leaders who are intellectual with respect to the flat world and the global economy. Additionally, we need leaders who are willing to acknowledge that there is an education gap forming, that there is an ambition gap forming and that we are in a quiet crisis. Moreover, leaders need to recognize that America needs a national strategy for dealing with flats. The second problem that adds to this quiet crisis lies within the ambition of Americas youth.

We live in a society where kids are more interested in watching Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest to see how many hot dogs Take Kobayashi can shove down his throat in twelve minutes than are they in watching a news story about Bill Gates announcing his retirement. This lack of ambition and interest in science and engineering is not necessarily the fault of the children themselves, but the fault of the parents as well. We need to encourage parents to help their children adapt to the flattening and to understand what their children must do in the world they live in to thrive. Parents need to know when its time to unplug the Xbox, shutdown the computer and turn off the television, and time to put an emphasis on learning. As a society, we need to put the parent back in parenting. We must educate parents of young children and expectant parents that their job is not to solely provide entertainment, but to raise them in a manner that can prepare them for the flat world.

Lastly, our education system needs change. The problems do not lie in our structure of learning, i. e. K- 12, college, graduate school, but in our curriculum. There needs to be a new emphasis on imaginative and creative thinking, while retaining the basic mathematic and scientific concepts behind that form of thinking.

Students need to be encouraged to study in groups and solve problems collectively, just like scientists and engineers in the real world do. There needs to be a system which keeps prospective engineers and scientists interested in those fields. The key to producing large numbers of students who excel in these fields is a vibrant, well-structured science program which puts the excitement back into creation and design. Without a vibrant, interesting, and practical science or engineering program, America is highly unlikely to preserve its position as a dominant body in an increasingly competitive and science-based global economy. The World is Flat, by Thomas L.

Friedman, provides an interesting look at todays world. Friedman examines the science-based global economy, and illustrates Americas declining ability to compete in such a system. Friedman attributes this steady decline to our vanishing emphasis on science and engineering, our lethargic attitudes and interests towards work and academic prosperity, and our lack of pragmatic values towards the flat world. Additionally, Friedman portrays the dwindling of Americas preparedness and future in engineering. To solve this problem, we must refocus our efforts to having an informed leadership, an interested youth, and well-structured and practical science and engineering programs.
