It is very depressing to understand the destructive nature of power and how it can lead to tragic events and destroy the lives of good people. How power can change the lives of those consumed by it is significant to William Shakespeare's play of murder and tragedy Macbeth. When an individual becomes corrupted by power they can begin to negatively affect themselves along with people around them. What is corruptive about power is that people can be negatively affected through change. When a person decides that they want greater authority, he or she may undergo change in personality and lifestyle. Power can cause a person to influence others to commit actions that they may normally not commit, disrupt the relationships a person has with others, and even have a person become less conscious toward consequences.

Power can cause a person to influence others to commit actions that they may normally not commit. At the end of the first act Lady Macbeth is speaking with Macbeth outside the banquet chamber about their plans to murder King Duncan. When Macbeth tells her that he no longer wants to follow through with their plans, Lady Macbeth accuses him of going back on his word. She eventually convinces Macbeth to kill Duncan when she says that [she] would, while [her baby] was smiling in [her] face, / have placed [her] nipple from his boneless gums, / and david the brains out, had [she] so sworn / as [Macbeth] [has] done to [killing Duncan] (Shakespeare I, vii, 61 - 64). Lady Macbeth demonstrates that she has more power than Macbeth and that she can easily influence his decisions.

This is shown because she changes his mind on the plans of the murder through words, not even actions. This means that her influence on Macbeth can obviously cause him to make poor decisions or decisions that he may not have made on his own. Opening the third act, Macbeth is now king and has taken up residence at Duncan's former castle, Forres. Macbeth is worried that his kingship is being threatened by Banquo and decides to speak with two murderers, who he persuades to murder Banquo and his son, Fleance. He does so by stating that it was [Banquo] in the times past which held [the murderers] / so under fortune, which [they] thought had been / [Macbeth's] innocent self (Shakespeare III, i, 82 - 84). Macbeth blames Banquo for the murderers previous misfortune to aid in convincing the murderers to kill Banquo and his son.

When Macbeth had little power at the beginning of the play, Lady Macbeth was influencing him, but the more power he gained throughout the play, the more Macbeth became the one who was influencing others and making decisions on his own. Power has caused Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to influence others to commit actions that they may not normally commit, which have resulted in the deaths of two honorable men, Duncan and Banquo. Power can simply disrupt the relationships a person has with others. In the fifth scene of act one, Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth about prophecies that he was given from three witches and how they have already been partly carried out. She is reading the letter aloud to herself in a room somewhere inside Macbeth's castle. In the letter Macbeth refers to her as [his] dearest / partner of greatness (Shakespeare I, v, 10 - 11).

This shows that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth seem to have a strong relationship at the beginning of the play. Another indicator of their strong relationship is how open they are with one another. The third act is when Macbeth begins to keep secrets from Lady Macbeth. In the second scene, after he has ordered the murder of Banquo and Fleance, Macbeth is in his palace when he hints to Lady Macbeth that a dreadful deed is going to occur. When she asks him what he is talking about he says that she should be innocent of the knowledge / till [she] [applauds] the deed (Shakespeare III, ii, 50 - 51). Macbeth doesnt want Lady Macbeth to know about his plan for killing Banquo so he does not completely fill her in.

He may not want her opinion on the matter because he comprehends her influence over him with decision-making, but what she doesnt know cant affect Macbeth's choices. This shows that their relationship has changed since the beginning of the play. The power that Macbeth has gained from obtaining kingship has increased his confidence in making decisions, which has caused Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to grow apart and has negatively affected their relationship. The more power one gains, the less conscious they become with respect to consequences. In the final scene of Act 1 Macbeth excuses himself from the banquet that he is holding at his castle in honour of King Duncan. He begins to question whether he should follow through with the murder of Duncan.

Macbeth explains his understanding for why it would be immoral to kill Duncan when he declares that [Duncan's] [at the banquet] in double trust: / first as [Macbeth] [is] his kinsman and his subject, / strong both against the [murder]: then, as his host, / who should against [Duncan's] murderer shut the door, / not bear the knife [himself] (Shakespeare I, vii, 12 - 16). Macbeth displays his awareness of the immorality of carrying out the murder by reasoning with himself that Duncan is a good man and even his cousin. At the beginning of Act 4 Macbeth visits three witches in a cave to receive more prophecies, and when they depart, Macbeth is greeted by Lennox, who informs Macbeth of Macduffs flight to England. Macbeth angrily responds by ordering the men alongside Lennox to ambush Macduffs castle and kill anyone found inside.

Macbeth illustrates that he has become an impulsive person when he says that from [that] moment, / the very firstling's of [his] heart shall be / the very firstling's of [his] hand. And even [then], / to crown [his] thoughts with acts, be it thought and done (Shakespeare IV, i, 160 - 163). Macbeth intends to act on impulse from thereon in because he feels that if one does not act immediately, then one will never carry out their intentions. Without the power that Macbeth possesses, he would not be able to just order someone to take the lives of others. Macbeth has changed from having little power and considering consequences for his actions to having great power and acting on impulse, which affect his decisions along with the well being of others. The damaging effects that power can have on a person can bring about harm to themselves and others in their life.

Power is capable of leading a person to make impulsive decisions and to lose an understanding of consequences. It has the knack of convincing other people to do things that they may usually not do, and ruin the relationships that they share with others. Throughout the play, Macbeth demonstrates his transformation from rationality to impulsivity, being influenced to influencing others, and from having close relationships with others to growing apart from them. Oftentimes when an individual has power and is in control, they seem to lack awareness toward the level of responsibility that is necessary to prevent terrible events from happening. Therefore, it truly is sad to realize that power can lead to tragedy and destroy the lives and reputations of good people. Work Cited: - Shakespeare, William.
