Holocaust Holocaust: great or wholesale destruction of life, esp. by fire. (The Macquarie Dictionary). Where and when did the holocaust occur? There is quite a bit of controversy over exactly when the Holocaust began, some historians date the beginning of the Holocaust to September 1939 when the German army invaded Poland. While others date the beginning of this prolific time to invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. Yet many others have many other dates that they claim are the beginning on the Holocaust.

The Holocaust occurred in many areas around German Occupied Territory, there were Ghettos in many major cities and towns, and also there were many of the infamous labour and death camps scattered throughout the territory. The holocaust ended when the war ended in 1948, when news of their defeat, the Germans guards deserted, yet many captives died before American soldiers and Aid Workers reached them to help them with food and release them from their prisons. Who was Adolf Hitler? Adolf Hitler was born on the 20 th of April, 1889 and was the third child for an Austrian Customs Official. Adolf was never a very academic student, but he excelled in the arts, and thus wanted to be an artist.

It was after school during his young adulthood when he was struggling to make money from his passion he began to feel a deep-set resentment towards the Jewish, he saw them as being well off and believed that they were depriving him of wealth as they came into this country only a short time ago and seemed to be well off quickly, while he struggled. He moved to Germany in 1913 and joined the army, this is where Hitlers patriotism mushroomed, he felt betrayed by his country after their surrender to the allied forces in World War One. Because of his feelings of betrayal he joined the Nationalist Socialist (Nazi) Party, where he quickly rose to become the leader. In 1924 he was sentenced to a five year prison term for attempting a coup. He only served 9 months of this prison sentence, during which he wrote his book, Mein Kampf. In 1933 the Nazis were ahead in the election polls and when they came to power, as their leader, he almost instantly formed the country into a dictatorship, outlawing any other political party than his own and suppressing any opposition.

Hitler died in his bunker in 1948 as Allied troops began to move in towards his hidden location, he died with his secret mistress and his famous dog. How did Hitler come to power in Germany? Hitler came to power in Germany through his amazing talent for public speaking and his abilities to work up a crowd. These famous qualities were the ones that he exploited at every possibly moment and it is these abilities that really gave him the ability to achieve the power he dreamt of. (Also see above) Why did the holocaust occur? The holocaust occurred mainly because the Nazis saw the Jews as inferior, and they proclaimed it to be their right, or duty to eliminate this inferior race, to pave the way for the glory of their own. Many historians also argue that the Nazis also saw the Jews as a threat to their dominance and they believed that they should remove this threat before they even tried to use diplomatic means.

What happened to the jews during the holocaust? Most of the Jews were sent to the infamous Concentration camps, the famous of which is Aushwitz, where the Jews were forced to do heavy work, just to tire them out and were fed little food and given poor hygienic conditions and not even the most basic living conditions of warmth and comfort. Many of these camps had attached death camps, with gas chambers able to kill huge numbers of people in the cheapest and quickest ways possibly. The other minority of the prisoners were sent to work in German factories where they were given on average better treatment than in the concentration camps, but there living conditions were still often un-bearable. What was the Final Solution? Hitlers Final Solution was a plan to exterminate the Jews in all Nazi occupied territory.

This plan was implemented through putting all Jewish people in sealed Ghettos which were in many major cities all over the German occupied territory; these ghettos were to be used as holding areas for the Jews. After they had been held in the ghettos for a period of time, they were deported in cattle cars to far more in-humane environments, now known as the infamous Nazi labour and death camps. At these labour camps they were forced to work 12 hour days for little food and to sleep in crowded, cold bunkhouses. Those who were too old or young to work, or just too weak, were separated from the others and sent straight to the gas chambers. Many Jews were forced to search the bodies of the dead for anything that was of worth, for example gold teeth fillings. Others were forced to feed the dead into the giant furnaces that acted as incinerators.

Describe some of the conditions the Jews experienced? The Jews experienced horrific conditions both in the concentration camps and in the German factories. Lice was common, all heads were shaved, on blanket was given to be shared by three or more women, lying in many instances on the floor, although during the later course of the war they became able to lie on bunks with straw mattresses. The food was often described as foul tasting muck, and servings were small and meal times far between. They water they were given to drink was bad and often infected, and also this was far between. The basic ideals of dignity and sanitation were removed.

Diseases were common and spread quickly because of the poor sanitation and health care facilities. What happened to the survivors? After their liberation, most Jews were sent to camps where they could await transport to their home countries, from their they had to make their own way back to their homes, often to find them destroyed or vandalized. Over 700, 000 Jews were left homeless after the war, about 400, 000 were transported to the United States to start new lives, while many others re-started their lives in their own towns, or countries, yet a huge amount were psychologically incapable to stay in their home countries or even in Europe, many even emigrated to Australia. I think is safe to say that all survivors of the Holocaust were deeply scarred by the atrocities that occurred, they wounds they have will never be healed and many Jews are know to have committed suicide because they could not cope with the outside world after what happened to them. What is the significance of the holocaust?

What happened to the Jews during the Holocaust is quite possibly the darkest part of our worlds history, yes their were the witch trials in Salem, and the terror attacks of 9 / 11 but nothing compares to the sheer scale of the Holocaust, it will never be forgotten because of both the harsh conditions that were forced upon so many people and the death tolls that came out of this tragedy. It is significant because it was the most prolific event in recorder history, no other event can come close to comparing to it.
