To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about the racist South during the Great Depression. The title literally means killing mockingbirds. They are Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, Atticus and Jeremy Atticus Finch. The title connects to patriotism because one of the main actions of a patriot is to help the helpless. One can help the country not only through actions, but also by words and thoughts.

To Kill a Mockingbird literally means to not only cause death of a person, but to hurt a Mockingbird. A mockingbird is literally a common singing bird that is remarkable for its exact imitation of the notes of other birds. In this story it stands for an innocent man that reflects the community in which he lives in. Killing a mockingbird, in other words, is about defeating an innocent person who reflects the community. Patriotism is the love and devotion to ones country. A patriot must be willing to risk his own life for his country.

Patriots do the right thing for the country and care about equality. Patriots do their civic duties and respect for different viewpoints. Arthur Boo Radley is an excellent example of a mockingbird, because it not only says so in the book, but he is someone from the lower hierarchy, who is weaker than others. His hair was described as feathery like a bird, which is a hint that he is a Mockingbird. He reflects the Maycomb community by staying inside of his house after his fathers death.

He is not willing to have anything to do with other people because that will lead them to gossip and eventually to trouble. He has been supposedly with the wrong kind of people. He stabbed his father with a pair of scissors and went back to his work, but because he was a child, not knowing whats wrong, he can be seen as innocent. His father traps him at home, killing the innocent child. Boo Radley no longer has a life, and stays at home. At the end of the book he comes out and saves Scout and Jem when Bob Ewell tries to kill them.

Mr. Heck Tate doesnt tell on him because Boo has done something good, even though it was violent. Telling on him would be killing a mockingbird, meaning that if Boo Radley is proven as a killer, he would have to go to jail. Going to jail is another way of hurting someone mentally because thats something to be ashamed of.

Tom Robinson is a black man who has been accused for something that he had not done, yet loses the trial against a white man. He is an innocent, crippled, black man of the lower society, who gets destroyed by immoral white men. He was sent to jail and shot SEVENTEEN times. He is literally killed after a racist attack. Even the racist journalist, Mr.

Underwood, wrote in his article that Tom Robinsons death was like the senseless slaughter of singing birds by hunters and children. Tom Robinson represents a victim of racism in Maycomb, in the South in 1935. The trial of Tom Robinson, a black man, and Robert E. Lee Ewell, a white man, proved that Tom Robinson is innocent, but the racist jury, which only thought of the white mens respect, sent him to jail. Atticus Finch is a patriot who defends a black, guiltless man from racialists, but for that he becomes a mockingbird. Atticus gets humiliated as a nigger-lover and various other things that his kids didnt accept, which led to more troubles.

Atticus has to worry about many things like his kids getting influenced by the town or defending him with violent fights. His own sister, who has different opinions than him, comes over and distracts him from work and stresses him. She respects their family name and teaches her nephew and niece racism indirectly. At the end of the book, Robert E. Lee Bob Ewell, the opponent of the trial, tries to kill his children. Atticus hasnt done anything bad and is a patriot because its not wrong to fight for equal rights and opportunities.

Atticus reflects a victim who fights for equality and loses his respect. Jeremy Atticus Jem Finch is another mockingbird. Children are not only innocent, they also know the truth and dont understand the meaning of racism, which proves their innocence. Jem hasnt done anything against Bob Ewell, but for being Atticus son and to hurt Atticus, Ewell tries to kill him. Bob destroyed Jems dream, which was to become a football player, by breaking Jems arm.

Jem is not only physically hurt, but also mentally by the unfairness of the jury at the trial. This makes it even harder for him because its happening during his puberty, when teenagers are moody about many things. Jem couldnt take it when Mrs. Dubose insulted Atticus, and shows his pain with violence. He represents the innocent children, who dont understand adults ways of thinking. The title, To Kill a Mockingbird, has something to do with patriotism.

Patriots, who make the country better by trying to give everyone equal rights, help the mockingbirds, the innocent, weak people. Atticus is an apparent patriot, who defends all the mockingbirds except for himself and his son. He defends Boo from his own kids making fun of him, and at the end of the book, Atticus doesnt blame him for the death of Ewell. It is very clear how he defends Tom Robinson. He doesnt defend him only at the courthouse with his strong words, but also before, at the jail when a mob comes to kill Tom Robinson.

He helps his family after Toms death. He lets things go smoothly when it came to his own things, but shows Jem a lot of respect, as his first son. Atticus never exactly defended Jem because Jem wasnt in a position of needing help, except for at the end. Atticus does the right thing by defending the mockingbirds, by standing for equal rights.

This civic job is risky, especially in a prejudiced town like Maycomb, because after every move people gossip a lot and a person is either raised up as a good person or put down as a different, bad person. Atticus can lose all the respect he had collected for many years by fighting for equality, which Maycomb white people dont care about. He teaches his kids to put themselves in the shoes of the other person, meaning respect every different viewpoint. Boo Radley is not a patriot because he is not interested in the town, but he saves Jem, a mockingbirds life. That was a patriotic, right thing to do because he has saved two childrens lives who have lives to look forward at.

Mr. Underwood might be racist, but he is a patriot, who cares about equality. He was ready to defend Tom Robinson when the mob visited him at the jail. He wrote about the tragic death of Tom Robinson that white people wanted to ignore. He wrote it so that even children could read it and understand what the town has done to him. The book, To Kill a Mockingbird, is about patriots defending helpless people.

The title refers to the innocence destroyed by others. The mockingbirds are Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch, and Jem Finch. The title shows a relationship to patriotism: people save the mockingbirds patriotically.
