Why is America A Country of Violence Many people might ask themselves, Why is America a country of violence and hate? There are several factors that contribute to making the United States one of the most violent and highly crime rated countrys in the world, such as the history of war, and poor gun control. But there is one reason that stands out from the rest and that is, the media. The media has an enormous impact, and influence on todays children and young teens. There have been several reports of kids getting hurt and even killed from emulating the violent behavior that they see on television shows.

The violence on cartoons, movies, music, and videogames submerges kids into an unrealistic, fictional world. The media is teaching children that violence can be safe, fun and harmless, which we know it is not. in addition it is also teaching kids that it is alright to resolve conflicts with force and teaches them that after being violent, somehow everybody gets up at the end of the day. Children begin to take fiction on television to the next level, reality, were they think that guns, drugs and violence are cool. Some children can be mature about things they see on television and others cant and want to act like or imitate characters and the thing they see on television. Crimes committed by children are growing rapidly.

In 1991, children under the age of ten committed more than one-thousand acts of aggravated assault and 81 cases of forcible rape. Juveniles twelve and under committed... murder, robbery, larceny-theft, and forcible rape" (Bennett). It is unbelievable to know that young twelve year old kids can be capable of pulling a trigger and killing a human being. In February 29 of 2000 a six year old first-grade boy pulled a loaded gun from his pants and shot a female classmate in the neck in Mount Morris, Michigan. The six-year-old little girl died shortly after she was shot.

This is just one of many cases that occur in the United States. The big question is why was the kid in position of a loaded gun and what caused him into doing such a terrible thing like that. The over supply and selling of guns in the United states is frightening. The violence on television pushes kids over the edge and into committing murder such as this case. My theory on this case is that the kid was accustomed to watching violent television, playing video games with explicit violence and he simply found a gun lying around and did was he learned when playing games and watching television. When your parents teach you to tie your shoe laces you eventually learn from seeing them tie them do it.

and that is exactly how kids learn to behave violently from seeing people commit violent acts whether they see it on television or at home, children are visual learners meaning they learn from what they see. The National Committee on the causes and prevention of violence reported in 1969 that violence in the media had a negative effect on children. Violent films encourage violent forms of behavior and promotes violence in daily life as being acceptable. Professor Malamuth, chairman of communications studies at the University of California and Professor Edward Donnerstein, a psychologist at the Center for Communications Research at the University of Wisconsin, have both conducted studies that suggest viewers of media violence are detrimentally affected. Many psychologists seem to agree that the more violence viewed, the more accepting children are of violence, the more it desensitizes them, and the more likely they are to become violent. Gun control is not very strict in the United Sates since the right to own guns is a right grated by the second amendment of the constitution, people abuse that right and buy a surplus of guns.

This leads into other problems such as gun theft were people can have easy access to guns by buying them on the street. Young teenagers can easily go to a bad neighborhood and buy a stolen gun. There are an estimated 200 million privately held guns in the US, where the number of gun-related deaths each year runs into the tens of thousands. In Canada alone there are more than 250 million guns and riffles yet they have one of the lowest crime rate in the world.

On a documentary video called Bowling for Columbine by Michael Moore he observes the differences between the U. S. media and the Canadian media. There is an enormous difference in the news seen in Canada compared the news we see in the United States, people in Canada see news about nice and happy or things that occur, whereas in the united states you only here about murders and violent acts.

The U. S. media overplays violent crimes that makes people afraid, instills fear and makes them want to go out and purchase a gun to feel safer and sometimes turn violent. Also, the documentary video reveals interviews with survivors of the Columbine High school shooting. Without a doubt the school shooting that left a mark on the violent acts committed by teens was on April 20, 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine attempted to blow up the Columbine High School cafeteria during lunch hour, gun down, and then blow up many of those survivors, along with rescue workers and media.

However, the timers failed on the propane bombs they put in the cafeteria and on the explosives they put in their cars to blow up the entire parking lot. When the explosives failed, Harris & Klebold they began to randomly open fire, primarily in the library. They killed 12 students and one teacher, injured many more, roamed the school for several minutes and then returned to the library to shoot themselves. It was obviously a horrible and traumatic experience that terrified the entire country and other parts of the world. For months afterward, Many people asked themselves the big question: why? After just days of investigation the media released possible motives that drove them to commit this massacre, one was that they listened to Marilyn Manson, an antichrist, devil worshiper, heavy metal music star.

For moths parents, teachers, and reporters blamed the heavy metal music star for what happened. That was just one of many reasons that led both students to commit the act. While explicit violence and language are played on television, the violent crime rates committed by young teenagers will not decrease. We know that there are other countries in the world that have more guns and riffles than us here in the United states, such as Canada yet they have a low crime rate.

In order to show some one why we are a country of violence all we have to do is turn on the television, flip through the channels and will see how our media plays a lot of violent content. Therefore, the solution to lower the crimes committed by teens is to set a limit and enforce strictly the rating on television shows, so that children do not grow up develop ideas from what is seen on television and then take them to the next level as they grow older such as the students that committed the massacre at Columbine High School.
