How does Shakespeare make the Audience feel sympathy towards Juliet in Act 3 Scene 5? The play Romeo and Juliet is about two families (Montague's and Capulets) that have been in a long and bitter feud for many years. The play is set in Verona in Italy and involves two main characters, Romeo, of the Montague family, and Juliet, of the Capulet family. Throughout Act 3 Scene 5 the audience feel sympathy for Juliet because at first, her cousin Tybalt is killed, by Romeo, who is Juliets husband, then Romeo is banished for killing Tybalt.

Romeo and Juliet have just spent their first night together and Romeo has to leave Juliets house early in the morning, before he is found and killed. Juliet doesnt want Romeo to leave and tells him that it wasnt the lark, it was the nightingale. Romeo is convinced by this and says Let me be taen, let me be put to death. Juliet wills it, so I am content. Then after these lines are said by Romeo, Juliet changes her mind and convinces Romeo that is was the lark that sings so out of tune and tells him to leave before he is found and killed. We feel sympathy for Juliet in this scene because she is stuck in a dilemma between Romeo and her family.

Romeo has just escaped from Juliets house when Lady Capulet walks in to Juliets room, Juliet is crying because she knows she may never see Romeo again. Juliet lies to her Mother and tells her she is crying over Tybalt's death. The actress playing Juliet would speak her lines with a saddened voice, she is feeling like she is caught in a dilemma. Lady Capulet then announces the good news by saying marry next Thursday morn, the county Paris, at Saint Peters church, shall happily make thee a joyful bride. Her Mother and Father do not know she has married Romeo. When Juliet knows that she has an arranged marriage she says He shall not make me a joyful bride!

Juliet is upset and does not know whether she will see Romeo ever again. At this point an Elizabethan audience would be horrified that Juliet had married someone else and not told her parents, they would also be horrified that she had refused to marry Paris as in this century arranged marriages were common. When Lord Capulet enters Juliets room he is in a good mood, as he doesnt know Juliet has refused to marry Paris, he says Wife, have you delivered our decree? Lady Capulet replies Ay, but she will none, she gives you thanks. At this point Lord Capulets mood immediately changes and he flys into a temper. Lord Capulet starts to insult Juliet and calls her a disobedient wretch and saying hang thee, young baggage at this point the audience would feel sorry for Juliet as she is in a major dilemma between her husband and her family, she cannot tell her parents that she is married as the two families are feuding.

In this period of time it would be hard for Juliet to have independence as it was a patriarchal society, this means what the father said, you had to do. When Juliet tries to get support from the nurse, all she says to her is I think it is best you marry the county, o, hes a lovely gentleman At this point Juliet is in disbelief at the nurses word she says Speaker thou from the heart? At this point the audience feel sorry for Juliet as she is on her own, even the nurse thinks that she should marry Paris, and she is in love with Romeo. At the end of this scene Juliet says Ill to the friar, to know his remedy: If all else fail, myself have power to die. His means she will go to the friar and ask what he thinks she should do, and if he says he thinks that she should marry Paris then she will kill herself if she cant be with Romeo.

I think that this is an important scene in the play, it has helped us feel sympathy for Juliet as she is in a dilemma. Her parents want her to marry Paris, when they dont know she has married Romeo. When she refuses her Father starts to hit her. Act 3 Scene 5 is a vital scene in the play because it starts off all the trouble with Paris off. By the end of the scene we feel sorry for Juliet as she is so unhappy she is willing to die.
