There is a huge water pipe, which crosses our locality. Lately, it had become old and rusty. Water was leaking and we even complained to the Authorities about the problem. Nothing was done. Last week, while I was walking along the street, suddenly I heard a terrible explosion. The old water pipe bursts out creating a gigantic fountain all over the street.
Very quickly, water accumulated all over the place; the street was gradually covered with the running water. The latter carried a lot of mud on its way and soon all the potholes were covered with the patches. When I looked at the pipe, I noticed a significant hole through which water was flushing and this gave out a whistling sound, which was indeed disturbing to the ear. By then, the street had been altered into a running stream.
All the vehicles, which were moving to and fro, came to a sudden halt. The drivers were reluctant to drive along the flooded street as their vehicles might break down. Amidst all this commotion, a massive crowd gathered along the street. An expression of anger could obviously be read on the faces of the people who had gathered on the spot. They were mostly the people of our own locality. Mr.
Thomas the president of our village council was boiling with fury; he was shouting out that he had lodged a complaint at the nearby Central Water Authority branch office. They did not do anything to remedy the situation. By that time the passers-by and the drivers of the vehicle were standing and listening to the arguments that was going on. However, that incident made a few happy; a dozen of children were elated and came out to play in the pool of water, which was flowing along the street.
Some who were more creative immediately constructed paper boats improvised a race among themselves. As expected, their mothers immerged from their houses to scold them, preventing them from playing in the muddy water. Other women fearful that there would be a cut in the water supply, hurried on the street with their buckets to fill in water from the pipe. Since the CWA plumbers were taking too much time to come, some people of my locality trying to mend the damaged pipe themselves. For that, they enveloped rubber all over the damaged part of the pipe.
Unfortunately it did not work. In fact the situation became worse. Other parts of it could not withstand the pressure and water started to explode out. Ultimately, the plumbers came at the scene.
After a thorough examination of the pipe, they decided that it should be removed completely. It took another five long hours to retrieve the old, worn out pipe to replace it by a new one. For that purpose water supply had to be interrupted in the entire neighborhood. It was only late at night by ten pm that water supply was restored and then water ran through the pipe. That incident certainly disturbed our peace locality for some time.
It is hoped that such thing will not take place in the near future.
