The electoral college of the United States of America should be kept in the way that it has been functioning for at least 200 years. Democracy in the United States nor its equal representation principle has never been affected by the Electoral College. The check and balance principle created by the founding fathers is represented in this electoral system. When voters cast their ballots in a U.

S. presidential election, they aren't electing the president directly. The elector members of the Electoral College are the ones who directly select the president and vice president of the United States of America. When the founders of the United States created the current Electoral College, they did it to protect all states from being ignored or given less attention by the main political figures that were running for the presidency. The Electoral College was always intended to protect the interest of small states that potentially could have been the most affected if a popular presidential electoral system was established. In the current Electoral College, small states are given a boost of power that allows them to gain more attention from the presidential candidates.

If the electoral system was based solely on population, the small states would be completely forgotten and left unrepresented in the presidential agendas. The Electoral College is set up that every state gets one electoral vote for each of its U. S. senators and one vote for each congressman in the House of Representatives.

Each state as established by the U. S constitution gets two senators that translate into two electoral votes. The U. S. representatives legislators are determined by population.

In other words, each state of the United States has two electors per state already established while the extra number of Electoral College voters is to be determined by the number of house of representative members in that particular state. Consequently, the most populated states in the United States are the ones who have the greater number of electoral votes. The founders believed that the Electoral voters should vote on behalf of the population they represented because they were the ones who knew the most about the different presidential candidates. As time progressed, the electoral system no longer works as intended by the founding fathers once expected. Currently, common voters or citizens have easy access to information that allows them to be very well informed of the different presidential candidates in the country. During the years of our founding fathers, information regarding presidential candidates was very difficult to acquire making it very reasonable to select a group of people who would vote on behalf of the population.

The Electoral College system no longer works the way it use to be. The greater amount of information of channels is not the only thing that has changed but also the way electoral voter perform their job. In the past, electoral voters had the freedom to choose the presidential candidate that they believed was the best choice for the constituency which he / she represented. Currently, electoral voters apply a philosophy of winner takes it all in the state. If a presidential candidate wins the majority of the common voters in a particular state, the entire electoral votes of that particular state goes to that candidate. This is a true democratic voting philosophy that provides small states with the best representation they can get from any electoral system.

If the United States ever changed its electoral system to one where the national majority voter determined the winner, all small state would be left out of campaigning routes and state such as New York, California and Texas would be the center of all political activity. The current electoral system provides American with true equal democratic representation where the equal majority sentiment is represented. It has been rare when a president has been elected without acquiring the majority of all common voters. Only four presidents have been elected only on electoral votes, but losing in common or popular vote.

The most recent example of this event has been in the year 2000, when George W. Bush was elected president of the United States of America. Only in such rare occasion is the Electoral College questioned its true democratic value, but in reality the current electoral system has always maintained the principle of equity and democracy.
