The novel, Lord of the Flies, is a story about the authors, William Golding, view of when civilization is taken away, savagery which dwells within us all, takes place. In this story, a group of school boys are stranded on an island with no adults. The protagonist, Ralph called all of the survivors together and is eventually elected to be leader of the group. With the lack of civilization the children become increasingly more savage throughout the book, leading to the antagonist, Jack eventual take over. When Ralph landed on the island it was like a paradise to him and all the other boys, but as there little society becomes more savage, Ralph experiences a shocking betrayal and ultimately comes to a rebirth.

Ralph travels through the characteristic loss of innocence cycle, from perfect word to shocking betrayal, from wilderness to death, and finally to rebirth. In the beginning, for Ralph, being on the island is fun. There are no grownups, no rules, it is a paradise. When Ralph appears in the first chapter of the novel, he meets Piggy, a smart fat boy who symbolizes the rational side of society. Piggy informs Ralph that there are not any grown ups on the island, Ralph seems to be happy stood on his head and grinned (8). Ralph is just being a kid having fun doing acrobats he does not seem to have a worry in the world.

The author goes in to great detail describing the beauty of the island from the shore fledged with palm trees (9) to the deep pool in the beach (12) that they use for recreational swimming. Everything seems to be perfect, a beautiful landscape no grownups and Piggy even finds fruit (9). This is a very good find and would defiantly boost the confidence of Ralph and his likelihood of surviving on the island. After all of the children are called together by Ralph blowing on a conch, everyone decides that they should hold an election for leader of the group.

Everybody almost unanimously chants Ralph! Ralph! (22). Ralph is officially the leader giving himself a feeling of being important and good inside. Up to this point everything that has happened to Ralph has been good and gone his way. Ralph is in a paradise and it seems he could not be happier.

Paradise on the island does not last for long because soon enough there are multiple shocking experiences for Ralph as a leader. First, the children climb the mountain on the island and they decide to light a fire. The fire becomes out of control and a quarter of a mile square of forest was savage with smoke and flame (44). Second, due to the lack of leadership and communication on Ralph's part the flame that was made to save them almost destroyed them. This experience sends a signal to Ralph that he needs to control the children more and that things are not going to go perfectly. Jack, the antagonist, and the other hunters abandon there post to keep the fire going, a ship (66) on the horizon appears.

Ralph is shocked to look up and see that there is barely any smoke on the top of the mountain. It makes no sense to Ralph that they would abandon there post to go hunting rather than getting rescued. These shocking experiences force Ralph out of the paradise and things will never be the same again. Ralph is in a figurative wilderness were he struggles in coping with knowing they have failed twice.

Once they lost the chance of being rescued and that they killed a little in the out of control fire. After Ralph yelled at Jack for letting the fire die out he walked along the ocean He found himself understanding the wearisomeness of this life (76). He is no longer in the paradise there once was on the island and is now thinking negatively in stead of positively. People on the island are getting lazier and they are also getting more savage. The children are making a mess of the camp site and are not helping Ralph at all with building shelters. Ralph calls a meeting and said, Things are breaking up.

I dont understand why. (82). Ralph's leadership skills are slipping with his struggle to keep everyone on the island in control. After Ralph went on his very first hunt with Jack and got a taste for the excitement of the action, the hunters start to play a game where they pretend Robert, one of the hunters, is a pig and the other hunters pretend to kill him. In the heat of the action even Ralph was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh (114, 115). Ralph is now lost and confused about what he believes in. The savage side has finally come out of Ralph he now has to decide whether he should let it loose or to stay civilized.

Ralph is lost in this time of chaos and is struggling to learn with the new experiences and knowledge he has. The wilderness in Ralph's mind is stopped when there are deaths within the group of children due to the increasing savageness. After Jack leaves the group and takes all of children but Ralph, Piggy, and some others, Jack and the hunters kill a sow and hold a feast with everyone invited. Simon is out investigating whether the beast is real and finds out that it was not a beat that they were afraid of but a dead man.

While Simon discovers this, the group at the feast is wild, dancing and playing savage games. When Simon comes down from the mountain the boys start to attack him thinking that he is the beast, they start stabbing and pulling his hair until Simons dead body moved out toward the open sea (154). The death of Simon opens Ralph's eyes to the savageness of Jack and the others. He believes that the killing of Simon was no accidents and no longer seems to believe in goodness in people or civilization. When Ralph and Piggy go to Jack to get the glasses back there is an argument between Jack and Ralph which ends in Roger, Jacks right hand man, rolling a bolder [that] struck [and killed] Piggy (181). Everything that stood for intelligence and civilization is now gone.

Ralph no longer believes in any sort of goodness in society because he is the only one left. Ralph's old beliefs and innocence is gone he no longer is pure due to the experiences he has gone through. Ralph's rebirth of new thoughts and coming to terms with the experience comes to him after the hunters have chased him to the feet of the navy officers. When the officer asks who the leader is Ralph loudly says, I am (201).

Ralph realizes that it is his fault that all of this happened and he is the on that should be responsible. For Ralph, though the rescue saves his life, it is not a time of great joy for him because he has learned that in everyone there is darkness of heart (202). He no longer believes that life is perfect and that people are generally good. Though pessimistic Ralph's new level of understanding now is that within everyone there is an evil savage side. Ralph goes through a classic loss of innocence from a paradise to rebirth. When Ralph first landed on the island it was a paradise until the children became more and more savage leading up to the death of Simon and Piggy.

His loss of innocence was a tragic because of the violent nature in the way it happened and through his rebirth he has a negative attitude toward human nature.
