Every young man my age dreams of being the next Michael Jordan, or the next Troy Aikman. For me, it was quite different. I wanted to actually do something that would make a difference in other people's lives; I wanted to be a police officer. My dream was shattered when I realized that the majority of them lie more than they tell the truth. The next big thing I wanted to be was a mechanic because I loved the feeling I got when I made something start up after being dead and in hibernation for a long time. I realized that the world is constantly changing and soon all vehicle motors will be digital and computerized.
Soon, brain power will no longer be necessary to discover vehicular problems. Recently, I started working for my grandpa and it has really led me into a whole new direction. A direction that would allow me to utilize my education and my math concepts. I was an electricians helper with hopes of becoming an electrician. It lets me feel the sense of helping someone but without being a police officer. Being an electrician gives me the same feelings as fixing a broken motor that would not have started correctly with out my help.
The first time I figured out that I wanted to be an electrician I was working with my grandpa and we were wiring a new place for a car painting business. My grandpa left me in charge of wiring the plugs around the interior of the commercial building. It was my first real big job to do in the electrical field. I, of course, jumped right on in. I wired all the plugs around the building to be GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Instrument) certified so that if water or moisture happened to get in to any of the plugs they would throw a safety switch inside the plug instead of shocking someone. Another reason for putting this in is to make sure that if I somehow creased or exposed the wires and they were touching the pipe that the wire was going through no one would be in danger of getting shocked if they touched the pipe themselves.
I got done with all the work that I was given and my grandpa came to inspect it to make sure I didnt make any flaws. He said, it looked good and then flipped the breaker switch. About that time, five of the GFCI switches flipped and black smoke came out of each one, simultaneously. I knew at this point that I had a serious problem on my hands. I had to revert and put back into working order the five GFCI plugs so that none of the wires were creased and that anyone who decided touch the pipe would not get shocked. After fixing the plugs, I went back to test it again.
I was flinching and squinting my eyes and thinking that something may happen when I switch on the breaker. Luckily, and to my surprise, nothing happened. I was jumping for joy but only inside. I didnt want to look like a complete idiot in public. After that, an employee of the company came in and asked if the plugs were working.
I said, yes with a nice little smirk on my face. I wanted to say that I was the one who fixed it but didnt want to sound to over confident or flamboyant. He then proceeded to plug in a impact wrench to start working on some new paint equipment being installed. I gradually went off and started to tackle my next assignment from my grandpa. I was wiring a group of halogen lights at the top of the metal building when I heard a loud curse word come from a man down below.
When I looked down all I saw was a distraught and angry employee that had been drilling on the paint equipment. I was baffled and didnt understand what all the excitement was about. I then climbed down the ladder to see what the man was yelling about. I walked over to him realized from the evidence what had happened. It was obvious that his new $ 200 drill was not working because he spilled a cup of coffee on it while it was plugged in. I started giggling and said I had just installed some new GFCI plugs that throws the breaker in the plug if the person operating the piece of equipment is in danger of getting shocked.
He laughed and shrugged his shoulders as I reset the plug and went on about my assignment. From that day forward, I think I found my true calling in what I wanted to be when I get older. As an electrician, I feel a sense of self satisfaction and accomplishment. At the same time, I also get a good feeling of helping people out because if I would of not been their to explain to that gentleman what had happened to his drill, he would have been raising cane to the place that made the drill or the place he purchased it from.
I also feel a sense of relief knowing that I can install products that will prevent people from being badly shocked. I believe that if I give a hundred and ten percent everyday there is no reason why I cannot own and manage a successful and thriving electrical business where customer service and quality comes first.
