I was assigned to read the book Fighting Invisible Tigers by Earl Hipp. The reason I was assigned this specific book is because I was at Oconto County Teen Court for fighting at school and told the panel I had an anger problem. This book, I think, was a very good one for me because before reading this book I got angry at very little things, was stressed all the time, and didnt know how to handle either thing. After reading this, I now know how to handle things that stress me and simply how to look at things differently so I can be happier and life be easier. The first part of the book was the introduction.

The main concept of then introduction was to point out that hundreds of young people feel stressed out by live, and Im not the only one. I thought that was a good point to bring up because at times, when you have so much stress you feel like your all alone and no one can help or would understand. I use to be embarrassed and mad about the idea of going to a counselor because of the common misconception that only crazy people go to them and if you do your weird. After reading the introduction I realized that sometimes you need to let others help you figure out things about you and you cant do it alone. I now look forward to going to counseling, instead of dreading it, because I think of it as a way for me to vent and work on not getting upset so easily. The first section of the book titled Life in the Jungle taught me the history of stress and lots of other things about it.

Stress, I learned, is a feeling you get from everyday problems and challenges. When you get the depressed feeling its when you have reached your limit of internal pressure. Internal pressure simply is just the amount of pressure and stresses you can handle. I sort of had an idea that stress could, over a long period of time, mess you up in the head but what I didnt really realize was that stress can also lead to illness, long-term depression, and even bigger problems. Of course with learning about stress came some bad news. There is no easy way or quick way to manage stress, and you cant get rid of stress completely.

I realized from this news that I cant just expect the stress to go away by itself and I have to work at handling things better, which can take awhile. Everyone gets stressed and there are always going to be things that irritate you the key is to just sit and realize that some things just arent worth getting all upset over. It was hard to believe it at first, but it was pointed out that there is a good thing about stress. WE as humans dont really discuss or learn how to manage stress so you yourself has to figure out how to deal with it. This at first didnt seem like good news because it sounded like there is no single, definite cure for stress and its kind of a guessing game, as you have to try different ways to deal with it. After thinking about it though I realized that it sort of is a good thing because unlike when you get sick you just get a prescription from the doctor and that takes care of it for you, but with stress you have to look inside yourself and get personal to help yourself.

I think it s kind of cool because you are helping yourself while getting a chance to learn about yourself. The next few chapters of the book are ideas on making your life a little easier and better. I thought this was sort of neat, in that it gave many good suggestions on helping your self esteem. If you have a bad attitude about life or low self esteem things tend to get to you easier, and thats when you get stressed. Part three of the book threw lots of subjects all into one, but together they helped to come up with ideas on how to deal with stress. In this part of the book its based on a lot of physical activities you can do that help you take your anger out, such as exercising, and ways to take your mind off of it, such as meditation.

Another big part of this book is how others perceive you. It discusses the types of person you can come off as relating to being stressed, and it emphasis that having friends actually can help out a lot with stress, in that they can help you out in times of need. I also got from it you need to watch out about having friends, because in some cases they can be major stress factors. All in all Id say this book helped a lot on things I need to work on, and things I can do to fix my anger problem.
