Walking onto the stage, seeing my challenger; thought not much of him, then I glanced to my left; hundreds upon hundreds of people have come to see this. My nerves shot to hell, I picked it up, plugged it in, waiting for the challengers opening riff. Just one more time, Ill get it this time, for sure! I was tutoring some twelve year old; his name, David Ellison Mai.

I was trying to teach him how to play the guitar. I have been playing for so many years, I cannot even begin to think how it is like for a beginner, all those new chords, scales, getting your fingers used to the touch of cold steel; set adrift on memory bliss. The only reason I got into this type of music is because of my brother. He meant to pack up his guitar when he moved out to his student home, he did not have enough space for it, and so he left it a week, and said that his friend would drop it off.

Of course, seeing it sitting there in my room, I couldnt just leave it alone; the shiny black surface, shimmering the light, almost giving it a warm glow. Every day, I would just look at it, and I was just getting into the whole rock music scene, so I knew a lot of inspirational guitarists. I couldnt just sit around anymore; I picked it up, and started to learn. I did not know what to do for the first week, it was only when my brother came back that I started making progress.

My brother came back for a week, to tie up some loose ends before he moved out for three years, to get his degree. It wasnt long before my parents were supporting me to learn, they were always buying me books, strings and anything I needed to progress. I can still remember my fingers getting to the point where they would bleed, due to me playing for so many hours on end. When I wasnt playing, I would just sit down and imagine myself playing on a stage, with thousands of people cheering me on.

That dream was very far off; I was still having trouble holding the thing. Many of the guitarists I knew of all taught themselves, and I could see how good they were. I wanted to be just like them, I vowed never to get a teacher. So, after so many years of practising, I was finally getting somewhere, covering all my favourite songs. I got to the point where I was training my voice as well; I wanted to be that good.

Like I said, I was tutoring this youngster, David Ellison Mai, he just started out, and he had the same dream as me, So, how many years till I get as good as you! ? Mai exclaimed. You think Im that good? Yeah! he started, Ive seen the things you do with your band. Oh, I have a band, I formed it last year.

It was not my idea to have a band, my friend just got a bass, and another got a drum set, you can see how it all came together. I dont want to plug my one in at home, because I know I sound horrible! Mai said to me. Youre afraid to play out loud? I started, Thats a bad way to shatter your confidence, you should play as loud as you can, and be happy with what comes out! Easy for you to say, you can actually play stuff, I still dont know my major chords!

Ah, youre one of those people who wants to become famous overnight. No! Not overnight, just soon. I want to show my parents that this wasnt a waste of money. Dont worry, they will not think that, anyway, see what Im doing, move all four fingers across the fretboard like this. Teaching this kid was not easy, he was so complacent.

If he could not achieve something in one hour, he wanted to give up, that is not a way to think if you are a guitarist. I try to teach him at school and home, but he gets far too self-conscious at his house, he is content learning in the music room at school. I do not mind where I teach him, I love to play out loud and have everyone hear me; Ive always been like that. Look, it wont happen!

Mai cried out. Your fingers are too tensed, just ease up a bit, the strings are not that tough! I said, giving a short sharp reply. You know what, I think you should sign up to the Knockout Guitar League, I saw you there last year, you did get quite far, and you only messed up because of your lead. I know, I dont think I should sign up, those things are rigged, I swear. Yeah yeah, you just dont want to do it, you know youre not going to get past the first round, mocked Mai.

Ok, Ill enter, and if I do get past the first round, you will have to have your lessons at your house, with the amp turned all the way up! What! ? Mai started, fine, you better pull something spectacular at the event! Great, now I had to do this contest. I love playing live, but when it comes to things like these, the fear just overwhelms me, it takes over, and I just drift into an empty space. I am going have to learn something new and stunning, if I am going to win this.

The next morning, a cold cloudless Saturday, I turned up for band practice. Like all teenagers, we do practice in a garage, it is the only place where we can play so loud and have the neighbours not complain. My bass player, Sam, bought this DVD, Crossroads, Ive heard of this film; it had Steve Vai and Ry Cooder, two very influential guitarists, who have a guitar duel at the end of the film. The duel is a very memorable part of the film; some unique and impressive riffs get thrown about, something well worth learning. Sam bought it round only to show me the ad on the back of the cover, now what type of person does that? The ad featured a T-Shirt company who also do prints for bands.

He wanted to get a name for us and get us tagged up as soon as possible. It didnt really bother me, I just like jamming out. What about Salaries? Sam asked.

What, for our band name? I replied Yeah, sounds cool. Err, Ok? I started, how about if you take control of the bands name, it is now your responsibility, ok? Cool, sure thing.

We practised for about four hours, we do have long sessions. After we play, we usually go back to my house and just chill out for another couple of hours. Hey SamI started. Yeah, whats up? Sam responded Do you think I should enter the Guitar league for next week?

Well Sam only gave half an answer. Well What? Dont get me wrong, you are an impressive guitarist, but, its just you really crack under pressure. Hmmm, great to know I have such honest mates. Ah, come on, dont take it the wrong way, technically, you should enter, because you have a good chance at winning, but realistically, you shouldnt. We dont want a repeat of last year.

How do you know about that? How do I not know about it? Sam cheekily said, Look, enter only if you have, like a big...
