Currently the government allows you to smoke a substance that kills over 400, 000 people a year nation wide, and over 3. 5 million a year worldwide. The tobacco companies strive to make this product more addictive (and its already more addictive that heroin! ). In fact, the government not only allows it, but funds it. However, marijuana, in its 5, 000 year history, has yet to produce 1 documented case of death. It has yet to be scientifically proven to have any long-term affects on the brain, and is less addictive than caffeine! Yet, marijuana is illegal.
Why isnt tobacco? There are 2 reasons for this. And none of them are because tobacco is better than marijuana. One- the government can easily tax it- this is good aspect of it.
Two- Politicians also like votes. Taking away the countrys precious nicotine would put a large dent in their chances in the next election. These same two reasons apply to why alcohol is legal. Why is marijuana illegal? Once again, there are two reasons for this, and neither of them is, because its worse than alcohol. One- The il legalization of marijuana was used as a tool to keep Mexicans out of America in the late 1930 s, as they where making lots of money selling it here, and the law gave them reason to arrest many Mexicans.
The head of DEA at the time told congress that marijuana caused satanic behavior, and white women to seek sexual relations with black men. Racism was at large at the time, and this worked Two- It has been illegal for long enough that every one has grown accustom to shunning it. The only people that use it are those who live life the way they want to without regard for the law- and many people that dont have regard for the law tend to be irresponsible, thus giving all pot-smokers a bad name. There for, many people are poised against it simply because the government says its a no-no, thus will not support legalizing it. This would cause a politician to veer from it for fear of losing precious votes.
So the situation really boils down to nothing more than ignorance, and politics. In a fair discussion, poor Mary Jane would be innocent until proven guilty, but sense the law has poised many against her, a fair discussion is impossible. So instead of asking why she is illegal, Ill explain she should be legal. There are five reasons for this one. One- Liberty.
Even if it was harmful, you have the right to hurt your self if you so choose. Tobacco smokers are not allowed to smoke in restaurants, the same should apply to weed. Hindus, Buddhists, Rastafarians, and other religions smoke marijuana as part of spiritual and religious ceremonies. They deserve freedom to practice their religion. The First Amendment states that the government cannot prohibit the free exercise of religion. Because you get high off marijuana, similar to being drunk, I think it should only be available to 21 and up, to ensure it is in mature hands.
Two- It would be controlled and regulated. You never see a dealer on the street corner selling cigarettes or booze. Thats because they are legal- an illicit market would never stay in business. Kids get marijuana easier than cigarettes or alcohol because the people that sell it dont care how old you are - or your health, they just want your money. Thus that same dealer would sell you hard drugs just as quickly. If it where legalized, the illicit market would go out of business, and a legitimate one, regulated by the FDA would take its place.
Three- Prohibition doesnt work. If any thing it causes the forbidden fruit effect causing people (especially teens) to want it more. We should have learned our lesson when it failed so miserably with alcohol in the 1930 s- which (not surprisingly), is when marijuana was made illegal. Prohibition is doing nothing more for marijuana that it did for alcohol; its ruining lives, causing deaths, and wasting money. Four- Cost. 50 % of the money the government takes it is from taxes on tobacco, and alcohol alone.
We could tax marijuana and make billions but instead, we spend billions enforcing a senseless law that wastes costly prison space to ruin the lives non-violent Americans. A law which does nothing but force pot smokers to give several more billion dollars of business to Mexico - that could have otherwise been spent domestically - every year! I dont care to spend my taxes on such a fruitless, economically draining, political blunder. Five- Marijuana has many good uses. It can be used to stimulate appetite, relieve stress, relieve nausea, and treat AIDS, asthma, and cancer patients. The cannabis has industrial uses such as rope, cloth, paper and fuel.
Making these products out of hemp is faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly that the current means of making them. Marijuana grows fast enough that you can make 6 times the paper per acer, per year, than with the current methods. You can make 4 times the cloth por acer per year than with cotton. marijuana also leads to non-violence and pacifism. Basically, there are five good, solid reasons why it should be legal, two why it isnt, and none why it shouldnt.
Im not encouraging that you become a pot-head, just persuading you to believe that the law should not stop it. Tobacco kills over 400, 000 Americans a year, marijuana only causes 734, 000 (American) arrests a year.
