As I was thinking about the outline for this essay I asked myself if I was really a person to invoke a certain prejudice to certain types of people? And If I was, was it because I had personally acquired this sort of profiling through past experiences, or was it acquired through today's popular media? Though I do not see myself as a hateful person, I have found that I do, unfairly, judge people by their age, sex and race. Racial profiling is common in today's society, from popular comedians to music. I have found that I have prejudice towards most races. Since I was in elementary I have always had black friends, but it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I acquired a sort of distaste for them.

I have thought of blacks as uneducated. I have had many classes in which I have literally passed the class for them, due their inability to not talk to other people or their unwillingness to not show up for class on time or at all. Though everyone gets a little loud and unruly when we are around our friends, it seems to me that blacks have a problem with carrying themselves in a polite manner when in a group. I have seen them dancing and / or singing, slap boxing, playing craps, etc. , all in school. Though it doesn't really bother me, I have seen other people ask them to kindly settle down and then have been quickly told (yelled) to "go away and mind their business, " but in a more frank and explicit. I have concluded that blacks don't respect very many people unless they have some sort of authority over them.

Though I do have some negative views of blacks, they are not all bad. I, as well as the rest of the world, have found that blacks are the most athletic race. Basketball and football seem to be the sports that are dominated by blacks. Eighty percent of the players in the N.

B. A. are blacks, while in the N. F.

L. it is seventy percent. I have picked black people over my friends simply due to the possibility that they might be better. Usually prejudices are thought of as negative, my prejudice towards the Asian community seemingly puts them in a favorable spotlight.

I always assume that all Asians are academically inclined; I always try to sit next to an Asian person when I have a science or a math class. Though most people will not realize this unless you are friends with Asians, they are incredibly spoiled. Asian parents rarely spare an expense when it comes to their kids. I have heard many stories of Asian parents buying their kids foreign luxury cars and parts for their cars, to paying off their credit cards bills after a shopping spree. Asians appear to possess a very entrepreneurial spirit. A lot of Asian families make their living owning and working in family owned business, mainly, dry cleaners, liquor stores, nail salons and gasoline stations.

Although I do express my prejudice for other races, I also have prejudice toward my fellow race as well. Being Hispanic I do feel like I am too judgmental of my own people. I have often referred to them as lazy, though I don't know why. Hispanics can often be seen mowing lawns, doing construction or working as a janitor.

Though I often laugh when I hear jokes concerning Hispanics and their "careers, " I have pity for them because they could possibly be illegal immigrants and could not receive a more glamorous job due to their circumstances. Age prejudice isn't as serious as racial prejudice, but I do tend to judge people by their age or "wisdom" quite often. I view old people as easily confused and uncoordinated. I don't really do it too often; it mainly starts to take place when I am stuck behind a Cadillac going fifty down the freeway.

Research has shown that older people are unsafe drivers; the fact that they drive slowly doesn't make up for the swerving in and out of lanes or the "unnecessary braking. " Besides the slow driving, there is forgetfulness. Though I agree that the older you are the more wisdom you have, after a certain age you tend to forget certain things. I tend to steer clear of older people employees at fast food restaurants, though they are very cheerful and give you a nice greeting, I cannot spare five minutes while they attempt and reattempt to ring up my "Jumbo Jack with no onions and two tacos" correctly. I have witnessed older people unable to execute simple tasks that they probably did before they got older. I am not sure if it is just slow thinking or it is just slow reactions, or both. The computer age has confused the older community with everything being computerized, digital and / or instant I cannot blame them for being confused.

My prejudice goes beyond just race and age; it also extends down to a person's sex. Being a man I feel that I have to favor and respect my own gender, while I unfairly label women as stereotypical. I view men as more trusting. I feel that I can trust my friends to cover for me whether it is for my girlfriend or my parents, I know that my guy friends will know what to say. I also feel that I feel safer working with a male partner then with a female due to part that I feel that men are a bit smarter, because we have less distractions.

Jobs that include certain skills and knowledge such as car repair, computer programming, carpentry, etc, are jobs that are male dominated. Most people, including women, have shown that they trust men over women at jobs that involve a more hands on approach to fixing. While I admit that I do have some problems when it comes to encountering people. I never let my prejudices of race, age or sex affect me to the point that it deters the judgment of a person as a whole.

Most prejudices are learned, whether from parents, media or their peers, but prejudice can be undone if the person wants to.
