The Fellowship of the Ring By J. R. R. Tolkien Book Report: Character Analysis Language Arts Class 2 nd period Shona Fenner 9 - 30 01 For this report I have chosen to write on The Fellowship of the Ring by J. R. R.
Tolkien. This book is a classic that every individual should read. This book is also part of a trilogy, and the story becomes more exciting as you read the other two books in the series. For this character analysis report I will focus on the character Frodo Baggins of the Shire.
Frodo Baggins is a Hobbit, a dwarf-like creature. He comes from the Shire, an area inhabited and ruled by Hobbits. Frodo likes to dress in bright colors, especially green and yellow. Of course he wears no shoes. No Hobbits do, because their feet are hard and hairy. His face is broad and red, and he has bright eyes.
Frodo likes rhymes and songs, and he loves to jest. He really is rather quiet by nature except when he is drunk! Sometimes he shows stubborn traits. He is also willing to do what people ask. Frodo's family is one of high standing and Frodo is the heir to Bilbo Baggins, finder of The Ring though nobody knows about this. Frodo has many friends because he is good-natured and is rather rich.
In the story, Frodo is motivated mainly by the magical power of The Ring. His followers and the memory of Bilbo encourage him in the quest he must undertake. Frodo faces quite a few internal and external conflicts. Internally, the power of The Ring moves him. Somehow, the Dark Lord intrudes on his mind and changes Frodo's thoughts. Through the journey he takes in the story, Frodo must face grief, joy, fear, bewilderment, and conflict within himself and with others.
Externally, The Ring drives him towards the Dark Lord and towards things he does not want to do. The Orcs, evil servants of the Dark Lord, also plague him. He also has to face the Dark Riders, masked pursuers dressed in black, who ride black horses. Most of these conflicts are resolved by mentally defeating them, or defeating them by magic.
Through his journey to the Cracks of Doom, many forces act upon Frodo. These include The Rings power over him, the Dark Lord, and all the Dark Lords evil powers and servants. In this book, Frodo never really finishes his journey. It is, of course, finished in the later two books of the trilogy. In the first book the changes in Frodo are very definite. Because of all the confrontations he faces, Frodo becomes bold and daring, strong mentally and physically, and knowledgeable about lands outside the Shire.
He also gains knowledge about magic, taught to him by Gandalf the Grey. He becomes more outgoing towards strangers and towards people who seem to be on his side. He becomes more serious about important matters. Overall, he is capable of accomplishing more than before. A couple of main conclusions from the story that can be used in other situations are first, Frodo shows a willingness to go on the quest for The Ring in spite of danger and difficulty. I think this can show us that we should be able to take up anything when we need to do so.
Secondly, Frodo had strength to overcome evil and wrongdoing even though he seemed weak. I think we all should be able to overcome these things if we make an effort. Finally, Frodo was willing to let other people assist him and never wanted to take all the glory. He knew he could not have done anything without his followers. We should be willing to accept help when needed, just as Frodo did in the story.
