What my dear Lady Disdain! Are you yet living? (I, i, 105) In mine eye she is the sweetest lady that I ever looked on (I, i, 165). These are quotes from two different characters in the play Much Ado About Nothing. Just by reading these quotes you can tell that they are two very different people with two very different personalities. Also, in the play they both fall in love and get married to two very different people. In Much Ado About Nothing the characters Beatrice and Bene censored carry on a love relationship and Claudio and Hero do as well.
By looking at these completely different relationships you will find that no matter what type of personality you may have, love is universal. The way that Bene censored and Beatrice treated each other in the play was far different then the way that Claudio and Hero treated each other. Bene censored and Beatrice were very disrespectful toward each other, but in a playful way they used their humorous personalities and witty statements to knock down the other persons self-esteem. For example when Beatrice said, Scratching could not make it worse an there such a face as yours were. (I, i, 122 - 124).
Claudio and Hero exchanged love through their eyes rather then words that pierce like daggers into ones heart. Maturity is a major part of a relationship. In these two cases of love, the maturity levels are very different. Claudio and Hero had more of a high school love. It was based primarily on physical attraction, and all they thought about was getting married without even getting to know each other first. Bene censored and Beatrice had the more mature relationship because they started off as friendly rivals.
They understood each other and they could recognize each others weaknesses, which gave them the upper hand on their relationship. The trust factor is also a very important component in a love relationship. Claudio couldnt really trust Hero because he didnt know her well enough. An example of this is when Hero is falsely accused of making love with another man the night before her wedding. If Claudio really knew her and trusted her he would have known it was a slandering statement from the beginning. In Bene censored and Beatrice's relationship they trusted each other so much.
Tis no such matter. Then you do not love me? Bene censored joked before asking Beatrice to marry him. no, truly, but in friendly recompense, Beatrice snapped back (V, iv, 82 - 83). They constantly ripped into each other all the way up to their marriage and still knew that they truly loved each other.
Another aspect of the two relationships that contrasted with each other was the ways they professed their love. When Claudio saw Hero he knew it was love at first sight and she thought the same. That I love her, I feel, Claudio confessed after first seeing Hero (I, i, 203). But, when Bene censored and Beatrice saw each other they exchange rude comments with each other, and later on in the play they expressed their love through humorous Shakespearian rhetoric as you saw earlier.
The most interesting part of the relationships was the ways they were established. Similarly, Don Pedro was involved in setting up both relationships. In Hero and Claudio's relationship Don Pedro stood in for Claudio and proposed to Hero for him. In Bene censored and Beatrice's relationship Don Pedro came up with a plan to trick them into professing their love for each other.
Another comparison between the relationships was that they both had the same outcomes. At the beginning of the play you would have never thought that Bene censored and Beatrice would have gotten married. In the middle of the play Claudio refused to marry Hero, but in the end both couples were happily married. This shows that no matter what happens, love wins over all. After reading this play I came to the conclusion that in life there are many different ways people express true love.
The only thing that matters in a love relationship is if the love is true, everything will fall into place. We see this principle in the play in both relationships. Although both couples had trials they had to overcome with each other, they still maintained that true love, they tied the knots that were loose, and they lived happily ever after. Bibliography:
