Friar Laurence's interference in the lives of the characters in Romeo and Juliet set much of the fighting, rage and ultimately, death of these characters into motion. Romeo and Juliet is the title of the great tragedy written by William Shakespeare. The characters in this play include: Paris, Montague, Romeo, Lady Montague, Capulet, Juliet, Lady Capulet, Nurse, Mercutio, Benvolio, Tybalt, Friar Laurence, Friar John and Apothecary. Three points must be made in order to prove the thesis statement, and they include: Friar Laurence's involvement in the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, the Friars lying to Capulet and his family and his involvement in the false death of Juliet. Romeo and Juliet may have thought that they fell in love, but the Friar should have known that they were just kids and they were really rushing into things. In Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence says, These violent delights have violent ends, and in their triumph die; like fire and powder, which, as they kiss, consume: the sweetest honey Is loathsome in his own deliciousness, and in the taste confounds the appetite: Therefore love moderately: long love doth so; too swift arrives as tardy as too slow.

When he says this, he is giving Romeo a warning to think his marriage over before he goes through with it, and he is trying to say that once he is pulled into this so-called love, it will take him over and eventually kill him. The Friar is trying to say that quick love will end up as a tragedy and he is foreshadowing the rest of the play. The second example of this would be when the Friar went ahead and married the two teenagers. He thinks that this marriage will bring together the two feuding families, when it will only separate them even more. The marriage was a huge mistake and was probably the biggest cause of the tragedy, because Romeo and Juliet are star-crossed lovers who felt as if they were in love, but can love really come to a couple in only one day? This was just a disaster waiting to happen, and Friar Laurence should have gotten the approval of somebody else instead of just acting on his first instinct.

Another example of this is rushing through things, and not thinking about his actions. Back in this period of time, people did get married at an early age, but I am sure that nobody really fell in love in one day and then got married the next. Friar Laurence should know this, and he was going against his church by marrying two young teenagers with out the approval of either families. The Friar made this marriage a huge mistake, and he could have stopped the whole thing right there and then by just saying no. Friar Laurence lied to the Capulet family many times after the wed of Romeo and Juliet, and these lies led to the deaths and feuds in the families. One of the examples of the lies that the Friar told the Capulet family is when Romeo slain Tybalt.

Friar Laurence was helping Capulet and Lady Capulet mourn over Tybalt's death, and was acting angry that Romeo was not slain. However, the Friar then went behind their backs and let Romeo stay in his cell instead of leaving Verona, as the Prince had told him to. The Friar lied to the family and deceived such a way that if they had found out, they would have slain him too. Another example of the Friar lying is by not telling Montague and Lady Montague of Romeo and Juliets elopement. If Montague had known about this, he would feel angry and betrayed. They trusted the Friar as their priest and as a man whom they could tell secrets and confess to.

Friar Laurence also lied to the Montague family by not telling them about their sons plan, and where he was hiding. Lady Montague would have loved to see her son before he was banished and not allowed to come back. All of her grief and illness was because of her sons absence and the loss of his wonderful spirit and attitude around their house. Secrets and lies many times are what lead to death, and fighting and by not knowing this, the Friar made the hugest mistake of his life by lying to two families and listening to a bunch of teenagers.

While helping Juliet to fake her own death, Friar Laurence made matters worse for the two star-crossed lovers. Friar Laurence meets with Juliet the night before she is to wed Paris and says, Take thou this vial, being then in bed, And this distilled liquor drink thou off: When, presently, through all thy veins shall run A cold and drowsy humor; for no pulse Shall keep his native progress, but surcease: No warmth, no breath, shall testify thou livest; The roses in thy lips and cheeks shall fade To paly ashes; thy eyes' windows fall, Like death, when he shuts up the day of life; Each part, deprive'd of supple government, Shall, stiff and stark and cold, appear like death: And in this borrow'd likeness of shrunk death Thou shalt continue two-and-forty hours, And then awake as from a pleasant sleep. Now, when the bridegroom in the morning comes to rouse thee from thy bed, there art thou dead. He means to tell Juliet to take a drug that he has made for her, and not to let her Nurse sleep with her tonight, for she will fall into a deep sleep which will make her seem as if she is dead and without any life in her. The Friar is all the way against suicide, so when Juliet speaks of it, he does not think about any other solutions, and takes the easy way out. By giving Juliet this vile, he is telling her that there is no other way out than to fake her death and put grief and despair over her family.

The Friar also made a huge plan that would eventually get Romeo and Juliet back together, but as usual; the plan did not fall through. Friar Laurence sent a letter to Romeo telling him that he was going to get Juliet away from her family and that he should meet them in the Friars cell that night. However, the news got out quick that Juliet had been found dead, and before Romeo got the letter from Friar Laurence, he was already on his way to see his dead wife. Without thinking, Friar Laurence again did the wrong thing. Finally, the Friar went to the tomb where Juliet lay in order to greet her when she awoke from her deep sleep. However when he got there, he found Romeo dead on the floor and Juliet just waking up.

When Juliet saw that Romeo was dead, she wanted to actually kill herself. And in fear that the guard was coming, Friar Laurence did not take Juliet away or stop her from committing suicide, he just left her there to die and protected himself. This only made matters worse, and now both Romeo and Juliet are dead. This series of events would have never taken place if Friar Laurence would have thought about others and not always trying to get himself out of the mess that he himself created. The death and feuds between these families was in part Friar Laurence's fault, and if the Friar would not have interfered there may have been a difference outcome and the motion of events would not have taken place. Friar Laurence's involvement in the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, the Friars lying to Capulet and his family and his involvement in the false death of Juliet have all combined to make a conclusion that the Friar had a definite role in this tragedy and he did make some matters worse than they could have been if everything had of been thought through.

That is really the worst flaw in the characters of this play. If everything was thought about clearly and not rushed through then none of this would have happened and Romeo and Juliet would not have died such a tragic death. Every single person in this tragedy did not think about his or her actions; instead they just went ahead with their first instincts and assumed to be right. If the incidents and events that took place were thought through, and analyzed before making careless judgment, do you really think this play would have really been a tragedy? Would Romeo and Juliet have died such a death? All people should take this into consideration before making a decision that can influence their life or others because nobody really know what rushing into things can do, but Romeo and Juliet had to learn the hard way.
