Oliver Cromwell was one of the most important figures in British history, a great general, and lord protector of the commonwealth, or republic, of England, Scotland, and Ireland for five years. He was born at Huntingdon on April 25, 1599, to a local family that customarily furnished members of Parliament. He was elected the member for Huntingdon in 1628; Cromwell made his first mark by attacking the bishops of the Church of England. For the next 12 years Cromwell was prominent in local affairs in eastern England, and was also chosen to represent Cambridge in the Long Parliament.

He then again attacked the bishops, urging their total abolition and advocating purification of the church by abandoning the book of common prayer and set up more sermons. As war between King Charles I and Parliament approached, Cromwell prevented the dispatch of silver from Cambridge University to swell the Kings funds; he also raised a troop and later a cavalry regiment at Huntingdon, which was called the Ironsides. In the English Civil War, after winning most of East Anglia for Parliament, Cromwell was appointed lieutenant general. Cromwell helped defeat the royalists in the Battle of Marston Moor (1644). In 1645 he took part in the decisive victory at Naseby, as second in command to Sir Thomas Fairfax. They took oxford in 1646, which ended the first civil war.

When the Presbyterian Parliament quarreled with its army, Cromwell himself an independent sided with the sectarian soldiers. After defeating the Scots, who allied with the king, at Preston in 1648, Cromwell decided that Charles was responsible for renewing the civil war, and he pressed for his trail and execution. Cromwell stated at the execution of Charles that it was a Cruel Necessity. During 1649 - 51, Cromwell fought successfully in Ireland and Scotland, replacing Fairfax as commander in chief in 1650. When he perceived that the Rump Parliament was not pressing on with the reform of the church and state and was against the army, he forcibly dissolved it. At the end of his speech he stated Take away that fools bauble, the mace.

He then invited a nominated assembly of Independents to create a new society. But this assembly was moving to fast for Cromwell and was too extreme for his taste as well. After the assembly resigned its power in Dec. 1653, a written constitution was drawn up by a group of army officers. This constitution made Cromwell lord protector to govern the county with the aid of the council of state and a single chamber Parliament. Before the 1 st Protectoral Parliament met, Cromwell and his council carried out many valuable reforms, particularly of the law. This was Cromwell's speech dissolving the 1 st protector Parliament Weeds and nettles, briars and thorns, have thriven under your shadow, dis settlement and divisions, discontentment and dissatisfaction, together with real dangers to the whole.

Neither of his two Parliaments passed much other legislation, however, its members being more concerned with constitutional questions. His second Parliament offered to make him King in 1657, which was an offer that he refused. Cromwell had helped to establish a first class army and a large navy, which caused the Commonwealth to be recognized as a great power in Europe. England was victorious in the First Anglo-Dutch war (1652 - 1654).

They did this by allying the French against Spain, acquired Jamaica and Dunkerque and laid the foundations of an overseas empire. Back at home Cromwell succeeded in establishing a broad church with complete freedom for all Christian sects to worship as they wished outside it. His building up of the national prestige and his tolerance in religious matters which was extended to the Jews, who were allowed to settle in England for the first time since 1290. These were all of his outstanding achievements. In the fall of 1658 Cromwell died, and England fell away from his attempt to realize a puritanical commonwealth of free men. Many people had different feelings about Oliver some thought he was a good guys, well others disagreed ed.

This was a quote taken from England's Parliamentary-Chronicle As for that famous and magnanimous commander, Lieutenant-General Cromwell, whose prowess and Prudence, as they have rendered him most renowned For many former successful deeds of chivalry, so in This fight they have crowned him with the never withering Laurels of fame and honour, who with so lion-like Courage and impregnable as with some wounds, so with Honour and triumph inferior to none. As one can see Oliver Cromwell had a lot of influence on the British's history, and will never be forgotten. Bibliography:
