A man walks into Footaction to browse the wide selection of shoes and apparel that the store has to offer. As he comes across a pair of shoes that have some Chinese writing on it, he automatically turns around and asks Chris, an Asian sales associate at Footaction, what it says. Chris, who is not of Chinese decent, tells him that he does not know. The customer says, Well, arent you Chinese? Chris replies, No Im not, I am Vietnamese.

Vietnamese, Chinese, they are all the same, the man remarks. Chris gives the ignorant customer a dirty look as he walks out of the store. Chris and many other Vietnamese people experience this feeling of disrespect everyday. People tend to think that all Asians are Chinese, when in actuality there are many other Oriental races out there other than Chinese, such as Vietnamese. Vietnamese people have a vast and diverse culture that often gets overlooked and misinterpreted.

People automatically label Vietnamese people with false misconceptions of their culture because of what people assume is true. The assumptions normally thought of by the majority of American citizens is probably seventy-five percent false because of what is depicted of Vietnamese people by movies, sitcoms, and comedians. Generally, assumptions are made because people do not understand the culture. Therefore, they generalize it with what they see on television or what they hear from friends.

Many people believe if a person is Vietnamese then they either own a convenient store, a nail shop, or a restaurant. Although these statements may be true, the assumption that all Vietnamese people must own some sort of store is strongly a misconception. In todays technological boom, many Vietnamese people are involved into such areas as computer science, engineering, and computer programming. Not only are Vietnamese people getting into the technology field, but some are even involved in politics, such as the recent city council candidate, Gordon Quan in the city of Houston, Texas. Vietnamese people are expanding their diversity in the workforce even to the area of Hollywood where Vietnamese film director Tony Bui decided not only to shoot his first feature film in Vietnam, but also to tell a story about a country not at war (Larimer).

Even though many Vietnamese do own many restaurants and shops, they also are embedded into many other fields and jobs that any other American can have or want. Another assumption is the fact that people consider Vietnamese and Chinese to be the same nationality because of appearance and language. In reality, Vietnamese and Chinese cultures are very different from each other. The Chinese language is much more difficult than the Vietnamese language because the Chinese language consists of many characters that all represent a certain word. On the other hand the Vietnamese language does not use characters, but instead use letters from the English alphabet with accents above or below the word or letter. In terms of speaking, Vietnamese and Chinese people are miles apart because of their differences in dialect and pronunciation.

The Chinese language tends to have only two main dialects: Cantonese and Mandarin; while the Vietnamese language, have over ten dialects all ranging from where the person is from within that country (Tran, Tai). Furthermore, the pronunciation of the Chinese language is much different than that of the Vietnamese language because the Chinese language is spoken smoothly while the Vietnamese language sounds very choppy when spoken. Not only is the language different, but the food is very different as well. Many believe that Chinese food and Vietnamese food is either the same or very similar. This is true in a very small sense because Chinese and Vietnamese cooking do use the same spices, but the cooking style is very different.

Chinese cooking uses a variety of spices to make intricate dishes that usually have a thick sauce covering a specific meat group. Some dishes that come in mind are: Sweet and Sour Chicken, Peking ribs, Kung Pao Chicken, and Pepper Steak (Orient Caf). On the other hand Vietnamese cooking tend to be simpler by adding basic spices to make lighter dishes. Some dishes are: Spring rolls, Vermicelli bowls, Pho (noodle soup), and Peppered Pork and Shrimp salad (Data Vietnamese Bistro). The main differences between Chinese and Vietnamese food is that Chinese food has many different textures and tastes due to the many different styles of cooking. In contrast, Vietnamese food is more of a simplistic style of cooking only pertaining to a more homemade approach.

There are other differences among the Chinese and Vietnamese culture that clearly define why they are two separate cultures. Although many people believe that the Vietnamese culture is relatively new, the culture has been around for over four thousand years (Tran, Hoan). This is what makes the Vietnamese culture different from other cultures in Asia, including the Chinese culture. Their maturity over time has given them great significance to their unique culture. Overall, the Vietnamese culture has expanded and has become more diverse than ever before. Many more Vietnamese people are joining the ever-growing workforce of various and different fields.

Vietnamese culture is now beginning to become more widespread teaching many people about who they really are. Even though many people still do have false misconceptions about the culture, the culture will still continue to grow making more people aware of it so that theses assumptions and misconceptions will be falsified. Hopefully in the future, people will be more educated about different cultures so that future generations of Vietnamese people will not have to deal with what happened to Chris at Footaction.
