In the novel Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte there are two generations. Some of the characters from the first generation are like the characters in the second. Some of these characters are identical to each other and they share many characteristics. This is not the case for Catherine Earnshaw and Cathy Linton. These two characters are different in many ways because of their personalities and outlook on life. Cathy and Catherine had different views when it came to love and marriage.

Catherine was deeply in love with Heathcliff. Even though they shared such a strong love Catherine did not want to marry him because she felt it would degrade her. This shows Catherines pride, which led to her marriage to Edgar. This marriage was not built on true love, but on Catherines desire to have money and respect. In comparison, Cathy was forced to marry Linton, with whom she would have rather had as a brother. Cathy eventually fell in love with Hareton even though he was poor.

Unlike her mother, Cathy wanted to marry for love, not money. Catherine Earnshaw and Cathy Linton are different when it comes to their family. Catherines father did not love her because she was always misbehaving. He once told her Nay Cathy, I cannot love thee; though worse than thy brother.

Go, say thy prayers, child, and ask Gods pardon. I doubt thy mother and I must rue the day we ever reared thee! (Page 37) Catherine also treated her brother Hindley poorly. As a child, she ignored him and stayed with Heathcliff. As an adult, Catherine made no effort to help Hindley with his drinking problem after Francis died, nor did she try to prevent Heathcliff from taking advantage of Hindley. Cathy Linton enjoyed a loving atmosphere at Thrush cross Grange.

She and her father were very close. Cathy showed her love for her father when she devoted herself to nursing him during his illness. Cathy never had and siblings, but she wished that she had. She once said Pretty Linton! I wish you were my brother. If Cathy would have had a brother they would have been close because how caring she is for her family.

Catherine Earnshaw was an extremely emotional character. From the time she was a child, she made choices based what she wanted. One time she became abusive when Nelly insisted on going with her to visit Edgar. She pinched and slapped Nelly, shook Hareton when he began to cry and then slapped Edgar when he attempted to intervene.

This sort of emotional outburst often made Catherine ill. Cathy Linton was more sensible than her mother was. She was able to control her emotions at all times. Even during confrontations with Heathcliff she remained strong and grounded. At no point was she abusive except with her treatment of Hareton when they first meet. Heathcliff interacted with both Catherines.

However, they each had very different relationships with him. Catherine and Heathcliff were deeply in love with each other and had been soul mates ever since childhood. Cathy did not like Heathcliff and he did not like her. Cathy often made Heathcliff very angry.

When she accused him of stealing her property he burst out Damnable witch! Off with her! Fling her into the kitchen! Ill kill her.

Ellen Dean, if you let her come into my sight again! (Page 292) Heathcliff saw Cathy as the cause for her mothers death and seemed revenge on her by ruining her life and taking her property. Nelly Dean also had a relationship with both Catherines. Catherine grew up with Nelly and Catherine treated her like a big sister. She often came to Nelly with her problems, but eventually Nelly did not show concern because of Catherines selfish actions. Cathy Linton had a better relationship with Nelly. Nelly was like a mother to Cathy.

Cathy also told Nelly things but sometimes Nelly revealed these secrets to Edgar. It could be argued that Nelly told on Cathy to protect her from Heathcliff and Wuthering Heights. The characters of Catherine Earnshaw and her daughter Cathy Linton were different in numerous ways. They had very different family lives. Much of Catherines character was based on emotions while Cathy is much more grounded. Cathy and Catherine had different views of love and different experiences with marriage.

Although the two characters never had a relationship it seemed that Cathy had learned from her mothers mistakes and successfully avoided the same tragedies. Bibliography:
