Anne Hutchinson has long been seen as a strong religious dissenter who paved the way for religious freedom in the strictly Puritan environment of New England. She was a woman who challenged the traditional subordinate role of women in Puritan society by expressing her own religious convictions. In her path to success, however, Anne was convicted of the crime of expressing her religious beliefs that were different from the colony's rulers. Anne Hutchinson, a Puritan, left England and came to America in 1634 in search of a place where she could worship freely.

Anne wanted to feel free to express her increasingly Puritan views under the leadership of John Cotton, who claimed there were opportunities for success and religious freedom in America, unlike the religion of England "favoring instead Catholicism" (Lauter 224). Unfortunately, Massachusetts turned out to be more religiously constrictive than England for Anne, even as a member of the Puritan church. There was no freedom at all in the "tightly focused, introspective, and concentrated [Puritan] community, " except to agree with the Doctrines set fourth by the church (Lauter 181). Anne found the "Puritans' world fairly inflexible, hierarchical in structure, and uncompromising, " and decided to develop her own religious beliefs (Lauter 180). She believed in a "Covenant of Grace" in which faith alone was enough to achieve salvation and that people could communicate directly with God -- without the help of ministers or the Bible (Lauter 224).

Anne taught her beliefs to others that would listen in her own home. Her preachings were unjustly labeled "antinomians" by the Puritans -- a heresy- Since the Christian leaders of that day held to a strong "Covenant of Works" teaching which dictated the need for outward signs of God's grace (Lauter 224). Her purpose in expressing her opinions was not to break down the church, but rather make positive change in those areas where the church was in error in her opinion. Alone, Anne was not a threat to the Puritan establishment in Massachusetts Bay. However, as a woman leading a growing number of men as well as women, she was a threat to their authority and had to be stopped. Women at this time were completely repressed and disregarded for intellectual value by the Puritan church.

The accepted belief was that intelligence and understanding was given to men, not women, so her chief duty as a wife was to her husband and children. Anne had stepped beyond the bounds of what was allowed for her gender. Her teachings were considered an attack on the rigid moral and legal codes of Puritanism, as well as the authority of the Massachusetts clergy. Anne's "interpretation of the Covenant of Grace threatened the religious and patriarchal hierarchy since it could have led to the collapse of distinctions of birth, education, and wealth" (Lauter 224 - 25). In 1637, Anne was tried in court for her insistence on practicing religion as she chose, and on preaching herself. She was found guilty, excommunicated, and banished from the colony.

Anne Hutchinson was a woman who learned to think for herself instead of blindly believing what the majority taught. She may not have succeeded in changing the laws of her time in the intolerant environment of Puritan New England, but her courageous actions helped set the stage for an America in which religious freedom was a reality.
