The definition of graphic design is anything that is printed. So graphic designers are artists and technicians who take an idea and choreograph all the elements to be printed and presented to a client. Graphic Design used to be called commercial design. Graphic Designers prepare the words and illustrations that eventually become newspapers, billboards, point-of-purchase displays, magazines, books, advertisements, and other printed materials.

The education one needs to be a graphic designer is 2 - 4 years in an art school, trade school, junior college, or university. The salaries graphic designers earn vary with experience and skills level, type of employer, geographical locations, and many other little factors. Beginners obviously don't earn as much as the more experienced, because most departments look for experienced artists.
