At his third climatic stage during his personal development after finding himself, his individualistic self, he rebels, thus struggling with his pride of intellect. He rebels against his mother by turning his back on the symbols of authority in his life refusing to take notice. I will not serve that in which I no longer believe, whether it call itself my home, my fatherland or my church... I will try to express myself in some mode of life or art as freely as I can and as wholly as I can (293) Isolating himself from family, Ireland, Catholicism, by his actions he shows that he is ready for the outside world armed with his individual self, ready to see where his creative life as an artist takes him.
