As I was watching the first movie with Charlene Teens, I could not believe what I was seeing. I was watching white people justify the fact that it is ok to make a mockery of others. They justified the chief in two ways: first they said that it was to help people remember the vanished tribes heritage. Secondly, the chief is a symbol to honor the Indian people. The chief is designed to be inspirational, majestic, and moving. Charlene, on one of her posters stated that American Indians are human beings, not mascots.
I agree with that statement one hundred percent. The chief in my opinion, reminds no one of heritage and it is not inspirational. The chief affects the what people know and the way people think about Indians. Being a student, if I was to see the chief at a sporting event, I would assume (as I did in the movie) that it was the universities mascot. The chief is mimicking the Native people, they have every right to be upset. To have a chief as entertainment is a mockery, it isnt dignified, especially because it is not a cartoon, then it is obvious that it is a clown.
In the second video, they are also mocking the Indian people. I guess it was some sort of initiation, I dont really know how I feel about this movie. I feel that it was a little more respectful in the sense that they were earning the respect from the president of the university. However, I do believe that the students were saying indirectly to the other younger students that they are not quit as good and as human as the older students are. Both videos were entertaining, the chief got crowds excited, and adrenaline going. The students who were being turned into red men put on a good show for the public.
They were strong willed and were doing what they had to do to get initiated. Both videos were mimicking the Native people and as Charlene stated, if it was any other group, it would not be allowed. These kinds of actions humiliate and insult the Indian people, they should be stopped. Bibliography: teens, charlene. video. 1997
