In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a beheading game is more on the serious side then to the comic side. The beheading game was basically a suicidal act. The beheading game was between two enemy parties, and the leaders of the parties agreed to the game. The leaders of the two parties were Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. They agreed to chop each others heads off and settle the fight between the two enemies parties. Besides the Green Knight and Sir Gawain, a couple of other stories that relate to beheading is, St.

John the Baptist and Hercules. John the Baptist was an acquaintance of Jesus, and they were both born around the same time. John the Baptist told this Queen that she was committing adultery for divorcing her husband and then marrying his brother. This act from John the Baptist made the Queen pretty upset and made sure that John the Baptist would be put in jail. Well one day the King was having this huge get together and there were a lot of people there and the Kings daughter shows up.

She is dancing, entertaining everyone and the King is please with this display. So he makes an announcement, the announcement is that she can have anything she wanted. She is very please to receive such an honor, but she is clueless on her decision and the Queen suggested to have John the Baptist head on a silver platter. The King didnt approve of it, but he made the announcement and had to go through with it.

So they take John the Baptist and behead him and put his head on a silver platter for the Kings daughters delight. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight had a deal to behead one another to settle conflicts between the twos parties. The Green Knight went first and Sir Gawain was to chop the Green Knights head off and one year and a day from this act, Sir Gawain was to be beheaded as well. So Sir Gawain chopped the Green Knights head off. The Green Knight was split in two pieces, head and body, lying on the ground.

To Sir Gawain's surprise the Green Knight pops up off the ground picks his head and tells Sir Gawain, we will meet again in one year and a day for your beheading, and hops on his horse and rides away. Over the period of the one-year and a day, Sire Gawain panicked in search for a way not to die. Well Sir Gawain found a way, he had received a green girdle from this lady and when it is worn it protects and keeps you from harm. It was perfect for Sir Gawain's situation. Finally the beheading day arrived and Sir Gawain grew up enough courage and was faithful to his word to go thrown with the beheading. The Green Knight took the ax and his first blow with it.

He missed, and took another shot at Sir Gawain's head. He didnt want to kill Sir Gawain because he was faithful to his word and willing to stay true to it. So he took one last blow at chopping his head off and hit his neck with the blade, but only left a scratch. Sir Gawain lived as the Knight stood with his hands on his head, admiring Sir Gawain's courage and faithfulness.

In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Hercules, and John the Baptist. It shows that all these stories were for power or to protect themselves. The beheading of enemies was a quick and easy death and way to get what you wanted. If you had a problem with someone then it was easy to just get rid of him or her and chop their heads off and you wouldnt have to worry about them any longer. All these stories served as a function on how things were ran in their kingdom. No these day, the electric chair would be considered our beheading acts.
