Stephen Edwin King, a popular American writer, was born in Portland, Maine on September 21, 1949. He is a storyteller who plots to explore the effects of evil and fear (Academic American Encyclopedia 81; World Book 323). Stephen King goes by many names or pseudonyms and they are Richard Bachman and John Switches (Major 20 th Century Writers 1626). He said, I just want to scare people. I m very humble about that. He has won both critical acclaim and enormous popular success (Academic American Encyclopedia 81; Discovering Authors Jr.

CD-ROM). King thinks of himself as a regular guy and really is one, although he does lives in a Victorian mansion with his wife and children. Aside from his writing, he also owns a rock and roll AM radio station and his own publishing company. His favorite hobbies are doing jigsaw puzzles, bowling, playing the guitar and going to the movies (Discovering Authors Jr. CD-ROM). His father, Donald, was a merchant sailor and his mother was Nellie Ruth (Pillsbury) King.

One day his dad went out for a pack of cigarettes and never came back. After their parents separated, Stephen and his adopted older brother, David lived with their mother, moving back and forth between Massachusetts and Maine. His mother took a job working in a laundry and a bakery to support the family and pay the rent on the house. He wrote his first book at the age of seven and went to high school at Hampden Academy in Maine.

He held jobs a janitor, a laborer in an industrial laundry, and worked in a knitting mill during his childhood (Discovering Authors Jr. CD-ROM; Gear Computer). Stephen majored in English and got his Bachelor s degree at the University of Maine at Orono. On January 2, 1971, he married, Tabitha Jane Spruce, who was a novelist.

Stephen and his wife had three children, they were Naomi Rachel, Joseph Hill, and Owen Phillip. Stephen King is a member of the Authors Guild and the Authors League of America (Major 20 th Century Writers 1626; Handy Computer). Kings major contribution to horror literature is to situate it within the general anxieties of contemporary life. His focus is not on vampires, werewolves and such, but on ordinary people faced with these horrors and the darker horrors of the lost jobs, disintegrating families, mental breakdown, and all the other fears that haunt the modern age. He creates terrifying situations out of apparently ordinary circumstances (World Book 323; Magistrate XI). His first published novel, Carrie filmed in 1976, is about a tormented teenage girl, Carrie White, who is gifted with telekinetic powers.

She was abused by a fanatically religious mother and ridiculed by her classmates. After suffering an act of the worst degradation, she destroys the town with her strange powers. This book came out in 1974 and was an immediate popular success. Carrie was the first of many novels in which King blended horror, the macabre, fantasy, and science fiction (Winter X). Among such works were Salem's Lot in 1975, an equally nihilistic novel, which portrays a small Maine village overrun and repopulated by vampires. The Shining in 1977 and filmed 1980, a writer, his wife, and their young son act as winter caretakers in a ghost-ridden hotel.

The writer goes mad and tries to murder his wife and child but only destroys himself. Other novels by Stephen King are The Stand in 1978, The Dead Zone written in 1979 and filmed 1983, Firestarter done in 1980 and filmed 1984, Cujo in 1981, Christine which was written and filmed 1983, It in 1986, Misery in 1987 and filmed in 1990, The Tommyknockers in 1987, and The Dark Half in 1989. His Danse Macabre in 1981 was an autobiography of his horror stories (Academic American Encyclopedia 81; Major 20 th Century Writers 1626; Reino 1). King s story world does have both elements of good and the evil, although he devotes most of his attention to the darker side. The important struggle for King in his book is that the heroes must first triumph over their own weaknesses. Don t write for publication, he remarks, Write it for yourself.

It s the only way you can come out of one of the world s most grueling projects still able to face rejection with equanimity (Discovering Authors Jr. CD-ROM).
