It is not the first time that opposite characters, in both mind and body, have been brought together by writers of all forms. This has been occurring not only in books, but also in movies and cartoons. It has become a writing cliche, which is very unoriginal. Cartoons like Pinky in the Brain, use this cliche. The beginning setting of this book has been borrowed from the Garden of Eden because the author wants to get his point out. He wants us to compare the beginning paragraph, which stimulates a life of paradise, with the setting later in the book, which is nothing like paradise.

While reading the opening of chapter one, most people would get a feeling of tranquility because of the serene setting. The use of words like deep and green, and fresh make this feeling possible for the reader to experience. This place is a paradise where everything is relaxed and peaceful. Here work goes unmentioned, and life is nothing but carefree. Unlike the opening of the first chapter, the second is the total opposite.

In the opening of the second chapter, a bunk house is described. Since this is a workers bunk house, we expect it to be filthy. This makes the setting rather unpleasant because the majority of people do not like living in filth. We know this because of the use of words like these: whitewashed and unpainted. The bunk house is also described as having small square windows, which the author is using as a metaphor for living in a prison. The author is using this metaphor because he wants to let the reader know all the horror that many of the workers went through.

These people are thinking of how to survive, rather than how to relax on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The reason for the different feeling between these two paragraphs, is the tone. The tone makes everything seem different. In the first paragraph, we have a warm and happy tone, while in the second we have a dark and stressful tone. A day in the shoes of the workers would be the exact opposite than a day in the shoes of a person who is relaxing and swimming in the pool near SoldadThe opening paragraph is very much like paradise. Both are places where no living thing would be harmed or would ever experience pain.

However, we can easily say that this is not always the truth, because the place of the setting could easily be changed by a simple thing such as a storm. Since we get the good and happy point of view of this place we can compare it to a paradise, but it is not always going to be such a happy and carefree place. During a storm, the grains of sand would not be shinny, but gray. The animals would not be outside watching the sunset, but inside hiding in their homes. This would surely never be a paradise if a storm occurs. We can also say that the happy place is very much like the Garden of Eden.

Its inhabitants do not know the difference between good and evil, they only know their beautiful place. They do not feel shame, and they do not have an ambition to see the outside world. At first the second paragraph seems really depressing because of the opening scene. One of the reasons for this, is that George and Lennie do not have any new friends at this ranch. Having the boss yell at you for no apparent reason also is not pleasant on the first day of work at a new place. Once they get to know more people the story starts opening up.

When we start reading chapter two, we get a feeling of not wanting to be there. However, after we get well into the chapter that feeling disappears mainly because of the happier things they start talking about. Therefore chapter one and two have exactly opposite settings. This has a very specific reason for it, which the author wanted us to experience.

The beginning of this book has many specific ideas which we may and may not miss. One of these ideas is trying to make us compare the first paragraph with paradise or the Garden of Eden. Once again the author wants us to see the difference between paradise and what the workers went through. 337
