Whether it be on canvas, in sculpture, theatre, movements of dance, or any other medium, the spark of artistic creativity is strong in Sudbury. This strength is demonstrated so passionately in the recording, performing and visual arts that it is evident that there is, indeed, hope for the arts in Sudbury. To begin, Sudbury has certainly been alive with the sound of music over the years. A recent example is this summer s many charity sponsored downtown music festivals. Some of these include Takin It To The Streets (an afternoon Saturday series) and the first annual Downtown Hoe-Down, both of which were a great success. Commenting on these events and the many more that took place over the years in Sudbury, Maureen Luoma, executive director of the Sudbury Arts Council, states excitedly, The weather was great no cancellations were necessary and we look forward to bigger and better for the new millennium!

Inevitably, because of their energetic participation, Sudburians exclaim that they still have hope for the arts in their community. On a more North American perspective, Sudbury has welcomed many international recording artists to their several concert venues, including the Sudbury arena, which hosts North America s most popular artists today. One of many artists who have stayed loyal to their Sudbury fans and have returned to Sudbury to perform on several occasions is the world renowned Amanda Marshall. Marshall has always put on a stellar performance during her visits to the arena, which is much appreciated by her northern fans. One star-stuck fan, Darren Very, comments enthusiastically on her July 9, 1999 performance, ... I was totally taken by her.

I love her song Believe in You. It is so... man I can t even think of a word for it. As a result of the numerous successful visits from best-selling artists like Amanda Marshall, music-lovers retain their belief in the recording arts in Sudbury. Moving to an international level, the Sudbury Chamber Singers are an example of a singing group that sprouted in Sudbury but have blossomed into world renowned superstars. Whether singing back up vocals for Celine Dion or forming one of two core choirs for an International Music Seminar in Eisenstadt, Germany, the Sudbury Chamber Singers still recognize Sudbury as their home and regard it with great pride.

Choir members cite many different reasons why they continue to sing with the Chamber Singers, one of which being the challenge of presenting great works to appreciative audiences in Northern Ontario. The Chamber Singers pride in their hometown is evidence that they themselves have hope for the recording arts in Sudbury. Thus, whether it be local, national or even international artists, Sudbury is booming with musical talent that is surely evident of Sudburians s faith in their recording arts. In addition to recording artists, Sudbury s performing artists are entering the spotlight and providing an excellent source of entertainment for the young and old of their community. A prime example of this quality entertainment is demonstrated in the phenomenal talent of the Ida Sauve dancers. For years, Ida Sauve dance studio has produced some of the greatest dancers the world has ever seen.

One exceptional young woman named Kelly Lewis, who has been a longtime student at the Ida Sauve Dance Studio, is receiving international recognition for her performances in modern dance. Kelly has not only won the Best All-Around Modern Dance award at Footloose in Ottawa, but Best Ballet $ 200 Scholarship at the Sudbury Kiwanis Music and Dance Festival, and a $ 250 scholarship from the Ida Sauve Dance Studio fund-raising committee. However, with all of her fame and fortune, Kelly still says her parents are amazing people and hopes her younger sister will be as fortunate as she has been. By bringing international attention to Sudbury s Ida Sauve dance studio, Kelly has given hope to the success of the art of dance in her hometown. On the other end of the performing arts lies the theatre, and at the heart of theatre in Sudbury lies the Sudbury Theatre Centre. Although recently struggling to keep their name in the spotlight in recent years with the addition of the North Bay Arts Centre in downtown North Bay, the Sudbury Theatre Centre has managed to remain popular among northerners with the support and sponsorship of local businesses and charities.

Not only have local patrons continued to support their performing arts community but local fans of the theatre have as well. This was demonstrated by the enthusiastic anticipation of the Sudbury Theatre Centre s champagne gala held at the beginning of the Sudbury Theatre Centre s new fall season. In addition to the Sudbury Theatre Centre, several other independent theatre groups have strived to find an audience in their community and despite economic recession, Theatre Cambrian, The Foothill Players and the Sudbury Little Theatre Guild have both recently and in the past continued to pursue their objectives. Bursting with confidence, Theatre Cambrian s Artistic Director, Jamie Bourget, says, We re the best kept secret in town! Also, the Foothill Players production of The Merchant in November 1991 was well attended. Thus, because of public support by both financing and attending the productions at theatre venues throughout Sudbury, theatre is no longer a thing of the past but a present and future form of family entertainment.

Hence, both locally and internationally recognized, the performing arts are alive and well in Sudbury. Another artistic medium, receiving the most recognition for its excellence and phenomenal talent, is the visual arts. The Art Gallery of Sudbury has strived for many years to keep the visual arts alive in their community. They have evidently reached and surpass their goals with the success of two major art exhibits held earlier this year, the first of which was Carl Schaefer s watercolour exhibit held June 3 to July 25, 1999. Rob O Flanagan, an entertainment writer for the Sudbury Star, compliments Schaefer s work in his review of the exhibition by stating, Schaefer [has] found an idealism, a depth of meaning in the tilled, rolling hills of southern Ontario.

This revue, printed in Sudbury s community newspaper, is sure to increase public attention to the Art Gallery and local artists, therefore increasing the hope for Sudbury s visual arts. On the other hand, not only are outside artists visiting Sudbury, but also local artists that have left to pursue their careers in bigger cities have returned to Sudbury to work within the community purely by choice. Rachelle Bergeron, a freelance photographer born and raised in Sudbury, has followed the path of many others in her field by returning to Sudbury and is now the photographer for the Laurentian University posters Live Long, Learn Much. Undoubtedly, this flood of talent entering Sudbury for the first time in years gives both artists and their fans hope for the arts in the future.

Finally, Cinefest, Sudbury s international film festival, offers local film artists a chance to express themselves in a venue that has taken the nation by storm in the past forty years: the cinema. Since 1989, Cinefest has been recognized as one of Canada s major film festivals. Also, Cinefest coordinates the northern component of the Ontario Film Circuit, which provides quality repertory films to various communities across the North. Moreover, Cinefest is actively involved in promoting film education in Northern Ontario thus giving the proper education to up and coming film directors and ensuring a future in independent film making. The outstanding work being produced is sure to give hope for the future of the film industry in Sudbury and in the North. Therefore, by promoting the works of local artists and through support of local art venues, Sudburians can ensure a future for the arts in their community.

To conclude, through local, national and even international support, patrons of the arts have given rise to a bigger and better plan for artists to strive for in the future. This plan for a future means that there is, in fact, hope for the arts in Sudbury.
