Saving Private Ryan Saving Private Ryan is an excellent movie. It gives an accurate picture of what happened on the fateful day of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy. Steven Spielberg directed the movie. He did an awesome job in keeping up with the accuracy and authenticity of the weapons, buildings, and props. Tom Hanks, stars in the movie along with Matt Damon and Vin Diesel, two rising stars. The movie is set on June 6, 1944 on D-Day in Normandy.

In Saving Private Ryan, Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) leads a company of Army Rangers in the assault on Omaha Beach. He survives the battle and is assigned a new mission. He and his company must find and return Private James Ryan (Matt Damon) from the 101 st Airborne Army Division Private Ryan was the youngest of four brothers who were killed on other fronts of the war. As the company of Rangers move on in the mission to find Ryan the men wonder if all their lives are worth the life of a single man. I really enjoyed this movie.

It was a great movie to watch if you like history or wars. This movie really hit close to home with me since my grandfather stormed Omaha Beach with the 1 st Army Division. He was on of the lucky few that survived. I had a feeling from the movie that I just can not describe. It really made me wonder what my grandfather saw, smelled, and heard. I wondered what it is all like to have mines, machine guns, and mortars all being fired at me.

It is impossible to comprehend because I know I can never be there. My grandfather died shortly after the war when my father was young. He had come home after the war and drove fuel trucks. He died in a wreck. The movie itself was well written. Many historians and soldiers helped recreate some scenes and props in the movie.

Spielberg had to buy landing crafts, trucks, and many weapons in order to make the movie. He also borrowed 750 Irish Army troops to play in the movie as soldiers and bodies. Many of the ships and explosions were CGI (Computer Generated Images). This really helped to add to the reality of the movie. In order to add to the movie, the cast went through boot camp training in order to act like a real soldier.

They learned terms, how to use weapons, and also hand signals from World War II. Two thousand uniforms had to be made from scratch since they are so rare. Spielberg also contacted the company that manufactured the American Soldiers boots to reuse the same pattern to make him 2, 000 pairs of boots. He then had the boots put through a wear and tear process to make them look combat worn. Just about everything Spielberg had for the movie came from Europe. He said many pieces of Artillery and weapons were only found there.

World War II was probably one of the most pivotal events in the 20 th century. It set America s place in history and in the world. It is sometimes referred to as the last great war. The whole war began because of the insanity of Hitler and Germany. Hitler wanted to take over the world. He just about succeeded until the nations around the world gathered their armies to defeat the evil dictator.

America played the largest role in the event, turning the tide of the war. America battled on two fronts, Japan and Europe. We still won that showed a lot for our country. All the men that fought and died for our country I hold in the highest respect. I love nothing more than to sit down with an old Marine and listen to stories of war and victory. God Bless America!
