The Bluest Eye The three passages that begin The Bluest Eye appear to be from a Childrens book. They show a family's life in the same terms, but they differ in punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. The first passage is normal in all of these aspects: Here is the house. It is green and white. It has a red door. It is very pretty.

Here is the family. Mother, Father, Dick, and Jane live in the green-and-white house. They are very happy. See Jane.

She has a red dress. She wants to play. Who will play with Jane? The second passage lacks punctuation and capitalization: Here is the house it is green and white it has a red door it is very pretty here is the family mother father Dick and Jane live in the green-and-white house they are very happy see Jane she has a red dress she wants to play who will play with Jane The third passage lacks everything punctuation, capitalization, and spacing: Hereisthehouseitisgreenandwhiteithasareddooritis veryprettyhereisthefamilymotherfatherdic kandjaneliveinthegreenandwhitehousetheyareveryah ppyseejaneshehasareddressshewantsto playwhowillplaywithjane The distance between the first passage and the others is the distance between order and disorder. Therefor, the first passage, which shows the expected, the way the average white family (in Toni Morrisons mind is supposed to live), and the next two get more chaotic. Then, they prepare you for what is to come in the rest of the book, the decline of the Breedlove family.

Saying that not only does the first passage represent the average white family, but the second passage represents the Mac The household and the third, the Breedlove family. While the Breedlove's lead a chaotic life, the lower are neither ideal nor completely chaotic, just like the second passage. The book is broken up into four major parts: Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer. Spring usually symbolizes the beginning of things, the time of birth and rebirth. Autumn, in contrast, is when things begin die. Maybe, it is in spring that Cholly rapes and impregnates Pecolas, plants his seed.

and while summer is supposed be a time of new life, in the book it is a time of death. In the Summer section, Cholly dies in the workhouse, and Pecola's baby also dies soon after it is born. Also, the reader is given the impression that Pecola's time is also almost out as the narrator describes how insanity is taking her over. Toni Morrison used a unique way of letting the reader know which sections in the book would be dealing with the Breedlove's by using lines from the primer passage as headings for each of the sections.

Taking seven subjects from the primer passage, namely the house, family, cat, mother, father, dog, and friend, the author builds a section around each one. In this way, she tells the story of the Breedlove's and develops the plot. For example, the first section describes the Breedlove home and the history behind it. The header looks like this: HEREISTHEHOUSEITISGREENANDWHITEITHASAREDDOORITIS VERYPRETTYI TISVERYPRETTYPRETTYPRETTYP Because there is no proper capitalization, punctuation, and spacing, the reader expects to get an almost chaotic picture of a house very different from the one described above. Such happy aspects as the dog in the Dick and Jane world have a totally different meaning in Pecola's world. (Soaphead Church makes Pecolas kill the dog, unknowingly, in order to obtain her blue eyes. ) On the other hand, Pecolas and Jane are somewhat the same in their lives. They both are searching for someone to play with them, and both find a friend, even though Pecola's friend is imaginary.

Finally, an equally innovative structural element is the use of lines from the primer passages to head subsections in the novel, illustrating the vast differences between the mythological Dick and Jane world and the reality of black family life.
