She depicted that the bus drivers were very kind unlike bus drivers in Seoul. She felt that people in Cheju still have humanistic side unlike from urban city such as Seoul. Indeed, she wanted to live the place where human feelings existed like Cheju Island. When she arrived at Pro-Sun Folk Village, she saw the Tol-ha-ru-bang, which is the symbolic statue of Cheju Island in front of the gate. As she has known, Tol-ha-ru-bang is one of gods, who protect Cheju Island so, it is everywhere in front of the gate. When she was at Choong-Moon Beach, she felt that the beach was very clean, calm, and beautiful place.
Indeed, she saw some foreign people who enjoyed sun tanning at the seashore. Those foreign people did not look strange to her because she still fell into the fantasy of Cheju that made her illusion of foreign country. After taking a trip at Choong-Moon Beach, she went to Cheju city. She found out there were not many fast food restaurants such as KFC, Mc Donald's, and Berger King etc. She realized that even Cheju city had not been urbanized yet even though there were many tourists at Cheju city. She thought all of these made the island of fantasy and looked more beautiful as natural itself.
While she was looking around the city, she saw the license plate number of the car, which came from Seoul. She was very happy. The license plate number of Seoul gave her identity of her hometown. When she saw the plate, she felt she was belonging to Seoul citizen.
If she is not Seoul Citizen, she did not feel any membership of Seoul. When she arrived at Cheju University, she also saw the Tol-ha-ru-bang in front of the gate. The University is located at middle of mountain so it is very large place as compared to her university. When she got out of the university, she met a university student who looked very old.
He is 31 -year-old student of freshman. As he told that he graduated and worked at Seoul about three years, but he could not see his bright future, so he decided to study again for his future within 10 years. After she met him, she started thinking about who she was, where she came from. She tried to find out her identity. She worried about her future, too. She thought she was old enough to get married and had some plans to do such as study abroad.
After seeing Cheju University, she went to Cheju Airport in order to catch a flight to Tae-Gu where her ex-boy friend lived. She was little bit afraid of seeing her ex-boy friend. She felt that Tae-Gu was unlikely totally different from Cheju that gave an impression of fantasy. The city is already urbanized and complicated.
After taking a trip, she had a time to look back in order to find her identity and decided to think her life within 10 years because of the Cheju University student. So, what Cheju Island gives to her during trip? What is significance of Cheju Island to her? Cheju Island gave its identity to people as an island of fantasy through natural environment. He felt that the horizontal line of sea gave him some kind of unlimited world and encouraged him a tacit challenge toward outside of his world. Also, he prayed his satisfied family and family health. After seeing the beach, he went to Pro-Sun Folk village.
He felt that some kind of spiritual world when he saw the Tol-ha-ru-bang statue in front of the gate. So, he bought the little Tol-ha-ru-bang statue as an amulet to avert evils. Tol-ha-ru-bang statue of Cheju signified to him spiritual satisfaction from his work. I think Tol-ha-ru-bang statue gives various meanings to each person who has different expectation. When he drove along the coast freeway, he saw the Haenyo or female divers whose lives revolve around the water where they harvest abalone, conch, and a myriad of other marine products. He descried the Haenyo as independent career women unlike urbanized women.
Tanned face and skin, wearing black divers suits, and speaking dialect language all of their appearance gave different impression to him. They did not look like Korean women that he had known so far. He thought that Haenyo is special given character from Island of fantasy. When he finished bicycle trip, he climbed Mt. Hall, which is the highest peak in South Korea. This place is the last his challenging spot in his trip.
When he approached to peak, it was about time to sunset. Looking down to the Cheju Island is the most beautiful scenery ever he saw. After taking his trip, he realized that Cheju Island signified as his challenging place and found his identity as a businessman. Cheju Island is a place of myths and legends and an international sightseeing resort with abundant natural resources to the tourists. Cheju Island also tempts to people with many exotic environments such as Tol-ha-ru-bang, black basalt stone, and beautiful coral oceans. All of these are structural elements of island of fantasy.
However, many people dont know about painful history in Cheju Island in past time. I have also been Cheju Island about ten years ago. I did not even know the Cheju's unhappy history and I just took a trip for fun. What if I have another chance to go to Cheju Island, I will think more historical side and approach to the meaning of island of fantasy to myself.
