Racism &# 038; Ethnicity At The Pan American Racism &# 038; Ethnicity At The Pan American Exposition Representation of Race &# 038; Ethnicity at the Pan-Am The Fair organizers had two objectives with the representation of? other? peoples and their respective cultures. The first objective was to educate the general population, those who could not afford to travel the world. The second objective was to show the superiority of the United States over small countries and colonies.

The problem of deciding if it was right or wrong depended upon who you were. People of today would have one outlook, while the fair goers and people on exhibit would have yet another. This makes it hard to determine if it was right or not. The Pan-American Exposition had many different foreign cultures on display, which included: Africans, African Americans, Filipinos, Alaskans, Native Americans, Chinese, South Americans, Mexicans and Japanese. Fair organizers who paid them for their services imported them. While on exhibits the people on display would do native things to their culture, to give fair patrons a show.

The fair goers from one hundred years ago would have thought this was perfectly ok to display people from around the world. They would stare at these people day in and day out. They would pay money to see Native Americans fight, Africans dance and Alaskans race dog sleds. The mere fact that people would pay money to get into the fair to attend other events and see other people on display, encouraged fair organizers to make the displays more exciting to keep the people?

s interest by changing what the people on display did. Truthfully I do not blame the fair goers for attending these events, at this was a time before televisions and the information super highway spread information. Many fair goers simply wanted to learn about various distinct cultures. Little did the patrons know they were being taken advantage of with misrepresentation of cultures. Little did the people on exhibits know, but they were being taken advantage of.

Since most of them did not speak English well, fair goers could easily mock and openly unfairly treat them. Fair organizers would do anything to try to make money, the admissions charge to attend the fair was taken and these shows only promoted these fair admissions. This led fair organizers to take advantage of the people on display to make their shows more exciting. They made the Native Americans fight wars against each other and against fake U.

S. Army Soldiers. They made the Africans do dances and act like fools, to help promote the American superiority. These actions gave onlookers the wrong impression about an entire society.

For example, The Old Plantation portrayed Southern African Americans as lazy? bumps on a log, ? while they were likely some of the hardest working men of society. What else could men do when they were in a little area with hundreds and hundreds of people looking at them each day? Did they expect them to build gardens, dig a pond only to have them completely destroyed when the exposition was over? They were portrayed exactly how, rich, white men wanted them to be portrayed, as lazy good for nothing country southerners.

They wanted to portray the African Americans like this to show that the white men are superior in every aspect of life. In their native surroundings the African Americans would be more active due to being able to roam the town, working, finding entertainment or spending time with family. Another example would be with the Native Americans, the organizers made the Native Americans fight wars; by this point in time all of these Indian tribes were peacefully living on reservations, living a non-traditional life, which was forced on them by white men. Many of the Indians by this time were farmers or they found other occupations.

The Indian battles were not very good anyways as they included many different Indians from a variety of tribes all mixed together, which basically lead to mass chaos. Today an exhibit like this could not exist. Although racism still occurs, I believe that people of today would realize how serious a mistake this is. First, you are taking a group of people out of their habitat, introducing them to new diseases and new technology. People today think zoos are wrong because they keep animals out of nature and let them get used to people were basically in a zoo, their every move being watched and analyzed by people that are stereotyping them without proper knowledge.

Stereotyping is defined as an idea about a person or group that might not necessarily be true or only partly true. The African Americans were stereotyped to be lazy and always happy, which is untrue for the most part. The point is who says our way of life is right? What are the goals of our life? To be successful, provide for our family? Well that is exactly what many of these families on display were about, they have many of the same ideals that we do.

Nothing separates us from the people on display; we all depend on nature and the will of God. The best way to educate the people through exhibits would be through viewing artifacts and reading about how the respective cultures acted, with pictures and paintings about these cultures. But again this would not be as interesting or as profitable as what the organizers did. In conclusion, racism and stereotyping prevailed at the fairs. Inevitably organizers tricked the people to believe what they wanted to portray, not the truth of what the respective cultures were really like. 367
