Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a reaction in which people who are diagnosed with have no control of. It is an emotional reaction to a shocking or disturbing event that a person has experienced (Bully, 1). These are just some of the events that have caused PTSD: military combat, natural or human-caused disasters, accidents and any kind of personal assault. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has also been known to be called shell shock or battle fatigue syndrome (Public, 1). Even though PTSD has specific symptoms it has been misunderstood and misdiagnosed. Norman Mailer s An American Dream shows us how being in a war can affect a person s mind and life forever, no matter who that person is.

The book starts off by telling us about the main character Stephen Rojack. Mr. Rojack is a war hero and former Congressman. It seems like in the beginning of the novel that Mr. Rojack has it all going for him. He is a legendary war hero and is always recognized for that.

He was just elected for Congress. He meets the woman of his dreams and seduces her. The woman who he seduces is Deborah Caughlin Mangaravidi Kelly. This is no ordinary girl.

Her family is one of the richest ones in the world. The first Miller 3 night he met this lady they hit it off in the back seat of his car in some trailer park. He must be some sort of smooth talker if he got a classy lady to do something like that. Things looked to be on the upside for Mr.

Rojack and it also looked like nothing would get in his way of what he wanted. One night Steve started to think about things, he was looking up at the moon and asking himself questions. Then all of the sudden he had flashbacks of the war. He remembered all the people he saw killed and all the people he killed. When he was thinking about this it was easy to tell it was making him mad and it just seemed like that is where he changed.

This is where the whole theory of him having PTSD came into place. He was fine a minute ago then all of the sudden he has these nasty flash backs and he turns into some sort of monster. After reading about PTSD it just seemed as a perfect fit for Stephen Rojack to have this type of disorder. There are three types of categories of symptoms for PTSD. The first one is Intrusion and that is when memories of a trauma occur unexpectedly which is also known as a flashback (Public, 1). The flashback happens when the victim has a sudden vivid memory which is followed by a painful emotion that takes over his or her attention (Emotional, 5).

Miller 4 Some of these flashbacks may be so strong that the victim may think that he or she experiencing the trauma again or seeing it unfold before his or her very own eyes. The second category is called Avoidance, this is when the symptom affects a relationship with others (Military, 1). The victim will try to avoid people who are close to him or her like family, colleagues and friends. One of the first things the person feels is like a numbness, and has no type of emotion what so ever (Military, 2). By having that have happen they can only complete routine activities. Next when re-experiencing the traumatic event the individual will go through different sorts of emotions caused by re-experiencing those events and then again will not feel or express any emotions (Military, 2).

People with PTSD will always try and avoid situations or activities that will remind them of the traumatic event they have been through. If they don t try and avoid these things, the exposure to them will worsen the symptoms much more. The final and third category is called Hyper-Arousal and this is simply the worst category to be in. This symptom causes the victim to act as if they are constantly reminded by the trauma that causes their illness (Public, 1). Having this means that they can easily become very violent and explosive with out having Miller 5 anything to provoke them.

They will have a very hard time concentrating and remembering current information because of their terrifying nightmares which might develop into a type of sleeplessness, that could last for as long as a month (Public, 2). One night Mr. Rojack is just sitting in his home with his wife Deborah they had just gotten done eating their dinner and were about to just sit and relax. Then Stephen leaned over to give her a kiss and they started to make out, all the sudden something just went off in Steve s head and he started to strangle his wife until she was breathing no more. He had not known why he had just done what he did but he knew he had to make it looked like he did not kill her. He decides to make it look like Deborah committed suicide, he then threw Deborah out of the building making it look like she had jumped.

The next thing he did was so weird and kind of sick, he had sex with their maid and acted as though nothing had happen to Deborah and just kind of forgot about her. All this happen because of some sort of flash back he had. The book did not really describe what the flash back was all about but it did seem like he was in another world and he had a lot of rage and anger in him to do something like that to his wife who he seemed to love to death. Miller 6 Another form of PTSD can be bullying some one around. What may seem harmful to one kid may be suicidal to another. In the UK ten to twelve children kill themselves each year because they are being bullied at school (Bully, 3).

Bullying can happen in almost anywhere from a jail to on the battle field. Soldiers on the battle field are faced with threats of be called a coward or lack of moral fibre (Bully, 3). About thirty percent of the women and men that have served in a war combat of some sort have experience PTSD (Facts, 1). PTSD has been known to strike more females then males (Public, 1). Over one million war veterans developed PTSD after fighting in the Vietnam war (Facts, 1). Some of those Vietnam vets did not even get any money for contracting the disorder that ruined a lot of peoples lives (Wounds, 2).

Six years after the war the vets finally got a settlement of one hundred and eighty million dollars to split up between an estimated thirty-five thousand vets (Wounds, 3). In World War I at least fifty-eight percent of the patients in the hospital had a case of PTSD (Emotional, 2). Later in the novel Mr. Rojack meets a another lady Cherry. He is very attracted to her and she is very attracted to his money. She has a boyfriend at the time but she does not really care about him she is just interested in Miller 7 Mr.

Rojack s money. Mr. Rojack went through a lot of interrogating with the police in all because they thought he killed Deborah. They questioned him for hours, they even gave him a lie detector test and some how he passed that. So he thought he was going to be scotch free with all this. Finally after the police have given up on Mr.

Rojack they decided to take him out to eat because they thought that they gave him a hard time. So Mr. Rojack and two of the police officers went to a local pub near by. Everyone was having a good time and everyone had a few drinks to loosen things up between themselves. It got pretty late so they decided to leave the pub and start to head back to Mr. Rojack's house to crash.

When they got there Mr. Rojack had noticed that Cherry s ex-boyfriends car was in the driveway along with Cherry s. He did not remember if that they were there before they left to go out. He was hoping the police would be a little too drunk to notice anything, but one of the officers said something while they were walking in and Mr. Rojack just changed the subject and they went on inside. The first thing that they saw when they got inside were to bloody bodies on the floor and Steve Rojack knew right away who the were and so did the police.

One of the police officers looked at Mr. Rojack and said to him that he was Miller 8 going to have to go down town for some questioning and this time things were going to be a little different. Steve did not know what had happen, the only thing he thought about was if he had another episode and he just did not really know what happen. People need to know more about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is a major Disorder that can cause a lot of problems with out anyone knowing who did them. About five to ten percent of the U.

S. will suffer PTSD in their lifetime (Biology, 2). PTSD can last from a whole lifetime to six months depending on how bad the experience was for that person (Biology, 4). Mr. Rojack did not do the sick things he did because he was that kind of man, he did those things because he did not know any better and really did not have that much control over what he did. If someone would have just noticed for a second what was going on with him then none of the things that happened would have happened.
