The story Where are you going? Where have you been? by Joyce Carol Oates, is about a young girl who was going threw a point in her life where she felt that her mother did not understand her. She felt that she could do no right in her others eyes. To make matters worse her mother was constantly comparing her to her older sister.

Connie, the main character felt like she needed to escape. She met a boy who some how seemed to know just how she feels and offers to take here away but she is afraid of him and is not sure if she should go. Eventually she decides to leaves with him. Connie, the main character in the story is a fifteen-year-old girl with long blond hair that seamed to catch ever ones eye. She enjoyed looking at herself in the mirror knowing that she was beautiful.

Being beautiful was everything to her. Connie had a way to hide how she really felt inside and acted in a different manner around he family, yet when she when out with her friends, it would seem they were two different people. She was growing more interested in the opposite sex and this is what she hid while she was at home. Connie was having a hard time at home with her family especially her with mother. Her mother was always comparing her to her older sister who could do no wrong. Her father was very seldom around.

She felt that no one really understood her. The line Connie wished her mother was dead and she herself was dead and it was all over, demonstrated her real feeling about her home life. Connie was spending her summer break with friends at the local shopping mall. One night Connie was and her friends had planed on watching a movie but a boy ask her if she wanted something to eat instead and she agreed. She spent time with the boy though she was not all that interested in him. On her way into the restaurant she made eye contact with a boy she had never seen before driving a convertible jalopy painted gold.

The Boy was staring intently at her but she tried not to notice and turned away, yet when she turned back to see if he was still looking he said Gonna get you, baby. Connie did not know what to do, the boy she was with was oblivious to what had happened so she just left with him and did not give what happened any thought. On the next day here family was going to a barbecue but she did not want to go. Her mother told her to stay at home then. Once everybody was gone for about an hour Connie heard a car pull in to the drive. It was the same gold convertible that she had seen the night before.

The car pulled in front of the house and had two boys in it. Connie came to the door but did not go out side. The driver ask if she wanted to go for a ride with him, she said no because she did not even know him. He went on telling her a lot of information about her like he knew where her family was, and who her best friend was.

This made Connie frightened because she did not know this guy yet he knew all about her. He told her his name was Arnold Friend. Arnold was a James Dean want to be, and tried his best to play the part. He was wearing an old tee shirt and tight black paints that tapered in to black leather boots.

From his small but hard muscles she could see threw his shirt she guessed that had a physical labor job. He wore sunglasses that day that seamed to mirrored everything in a strange light. Judging from the wrinkles around his eyes and his long black hair, he was older that eighteen years of age. Arnold asked several times for her to go with on a ride but Connie would still not come out of the house.

She asked them to go away or she would call the police. Then Arnold said that he would not come in after her as long as she did not pick up the phone. He wanted to take her away from this life that somehow he knew she hated. But she was to stunned and afraid to stay or go. Arnold began to threaten her family if she did not come with him.

So finally she did. The basic conflict was if she was going to leave with this boy who scared her but understood her or stay were she was not sure if she belonged. When she left that was the resolution. The story was well written.

I had no trouble understanding the language that was used. It was simple and to the point. The author seamed to spend more time describing Arnold than anyone else, but the authors descriptions of the character were very clear. My personal did not like the ending.

You are left wandering if she is leaving for good, or just to go for a ride, and what ever else Arnold had in mind. In short, a strange story all around.
