A lot is at stake come November of 2000. Polls are showing this could be one of the closest presidential elections in decades and the last thing either candidate needs is bad Press. Vice president Al Gore could be getting the type of attention he fears most. The Press is now publishing e-mail frauds that could link the vice president to the problem.
The emails are the latest in a series of bad misfortunes due to the Monica Lewinsky Congress is investigating the White House due to thousands of e-mails never being turned in under subpoena ranging from Whitewater to the Monica scandal. The archive problem came to light earlier this year by a group called Judicial Watch. Howard Sparks, a witness called forth by Rep. Dan Burton R-Indiana admitted that he had wrote a memo to the vice-president advising him back in 1993 that his e-mail wasnt being properly archived. He claims the White House told him to get lost and the vice presidents office would take care of the problem. Now seven years later the vice presidents office has admitted that they have lost one full year of Gores back up e-mail.
This could damage Gore politically since Sparks has been with the White House since 1987 and holds the rank of GS 14. Also, this could show that the Clinton- Gore White House has participated in schemes to avoid getting various laws and orders by courts to maintain such records. In the vice presidents office they claim that contractors failed to put a back up on the computers E drive during the years from 1998 to 1999. Since there was no back up E drive the e-mails apparently could be gone for good. However, there is a slight chance of a recovery from some of the e-mails by gathering paper copies that staffers kept and any messages staffers stored on their individual computers. Also, there could be more e-mails available on backup tapes from the main White House computer system.
The reason being is some of Gore staffers were tied in with a computer archive. On June 9, 2000 a White House spokesman had no immediate comment on whether Gore had any recollection about the matter. However on June 13, 2000 Gore told the media in a press interview that he remembers his office losing some e-mail. This marked the first time that Vice President Gore has commented on this issue since the White House admitted last week that some of the e-mails from 1998 to 1999 might no longer exist. Gore said he remembers the computer system breaking down and losing three days of e-mail. Gore said he confronted his staff and asked them what had happened?
He claims that was his way of telling his people not to let that happen again. Gore adds that he first learned that more e-mail were lost from the newspapers. When asked of the memo that Sparks had wrote to the vice presidents office advising them to take cautionary notice, Gore said he didnt know of any such memo existed. Up until now Gore has claimed that this was another political game put on by the Republicans. Since President Clinton is in his final months as president it is unclear on how this will turn out leading in to the fall election. Regardless of the outcome, this is the last thing Vice President Gore needs since he is trailing in the polls by as much as twelve points as of July 3, 2000.
