Society? s Influence in Wuthering Heights In many works of literature, characters are creatures of the society from which they come. Rather, the characters? behaviors are a direct result of the people they are surrounded by most of their lives.

In Wuthering Heights, a traditional Victorian novel by Emily Bronte, Heathcliff is affected by the society in which he is raised. Heathcliff grew up as an outcast in the Earnshaw household, and was mistreated by Hindley. Hindley would say mean things to him, humiliate him, and try to hurt him physically. For example, when they were children, Hindley threw an iron weight at Heathcliff. ?

Hindley threw it, hitting him on the breast, and down he fell. ? (Bronte, 43). Even after Mr. Earnshaw dies, Hindley banishes Heathcliff to the servant? s quarters. ?

He drove him from their company to the servants, deprived him of the instructions of the curate, and insisted that he should labour out of doors instead, compelling him to do so as hard as any other lad on the farm. ? (49) Heathcliff took all of this abuse at first. But after taking much abuse, one can only stay away from revenge tactics for a short while. Heathcliff vows revenge after Hindley embarrasses him in front of Catherine, Edgar Linton, and Isabella Linton. ? I? m trying to settle how I shall pay Hindley back. I don?

t care how long I wait, if I can only do it at last. I hope he will not die before I do? , (63) When Heathcliff left the house for two years, he came back a different man. He was not only refined, but he had revenge in mind. ? Afterward, settle my score with Hindley. ? (97). He wanted to get back at Hindley for all of his wrong doings to him. He started to exhibit some of the evil qualities that he had been exposed to when he was a child.

For example, Heathcliff sent the curate away so Hindley? s son, Hampton could not learn, just as Hindley forbade Heathcliff to take any more lessons after Mr. Earnshaw died. ? No, I was told the curate should have his teeth dashed down his throat if he stepped over the threshold-Heathcliff promised him that! ? (110) The society in which Heathcliff was raised had a powerful impact on him later in life.

The influence of Hindley caused Heathcliff to be cruel just as Hindley was. Hindley? s behavior resulted in Heathcliff? s evil later. The evil society, in which Heathcliff was exposed to, caused him to act the same way.
