Christian Symbolism It is often said that Jesus lives inside all of us. Sometimes this is hard to believe, almost impossible, however Ken Kesey shows through his character R. P. Mc Murphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest that the Spirit of Christ is present in even the least expected of all people. Mc Murphy is a symbol for Christ as he tries to free the patients of the combine from Big Nurse s control.

Mc Murphy strives for justice for his fellow patients through his non-judgmental character, his Christ-like actions, and even in death. Similar to Jesus, Mc Murphy treats the patients of the ward equally. As soon as he entered the ward, Mc Murphy takes it upon himself to shake hands with and meet every single person there. Not to discriminate against anyone, he shakes the hands of the Wheelers and the Walkers and Vegetables, shakes hands that he has to pick up out of laps like picking up dead birds (Kesey, 25). Big Nurse has spent her whole life molding the ward into her own perfection that is at the expense of the patients, where she abuses her power to hold complete control over each person that belittles them and strikes fear into their eyes. In biblical scriptures it is shown how Jesus never held himself above others.

Contrary to Big Nurse, Mc Murphy displays this Christ-like attribute throughout the novel. Mc Murphy is able to lighten the whole mood of the ward, where he is found frequently reminiscing and mingling with his new found friends: playing cards, joking with the patients, and sharing past stories with them. Mc Murphy challenges Big Nurse and her black boys to make the patients feel comfortable and accepted. On page 23 of One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, Chief Bromden observes the (patients) are grinning now, not so uneasy anymore, and glad that something out of the ordinary s going on. Mc Murphy lifts the spirits of the combine; previously a depressing atmosphere but now a lively residence.

Right from the beginning Mc Murphy challenged Big Nurse s methods. While he was being given his medication, he asked what he was being given instead of simply doing as he was told. Mc Murphy s behaviour reflects that of Jesus when he questioned the practices of the Pharisees. Rather than merely obeying the orders of authority, they question their credibility and demand explanations.

Mc Murphy realizes that Big Nurse s domination over the combine has oppressed the patients and that it is time for a change. The story of Jesus Goes to the Temple parallels Mc Murphy s actions at the institute. When they arrived in Jerusalem, Jesus went to the Temple and began to drive out all those who were buying and selling. He overturned the tables of the money-changers and the stools of those who sold pigeons, and he would not let anyone carry anything through the temple courtyards.

He then taught to the people: It is written in the Scriptures that God said, My Temple will be called a house of prayer for the people of all nations. But you have turned it into a hideout for thieves! (Mark 11: 15 - 17) In an institute that is meant to help the insane, Mc Murphy notices that the rules and regulations set by Big Nurse are deterrents to the health of the residents, and that her practices only stabilize if not worsen their condition. Throughout the novel Mc Murphy is able to openly defy and rebel against the unjust customs of Big Nurse s rule for the better of the patients. He introduces gambling and women to show his friends that there is more to life than what Nurse Ratched offers. R. P.

Mc Murphy s resemblance to Jesus is most perceptible in his death. Jesus actions at the Temple were considered a threat to the authorities, as were Mc Murphy s actions in the combine. As Mc Murphy gained more respect and his followers multiplied, Big Nurse knew she had to act. The chief priests and the teachers of the Law heard of this, so they began looking for some way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching (Mark 11: 18). At first Nurse Ratched had planned on simply killing Mc Murphy, but then realized that this course of action would make him a martyr and only further weaken her control over the combine.

Mc Murphy himself realizes the comparison to Christ when he is strapped for shock treatment, asking Do I get a crown of thorns? (Kesey, 238) referring to the thorns placed on Jesus head before he was crucified. However Nurse Ratched knew that she could not let this carry on any further, so she arranged for his death just like Pontus Pilate did Jesus. Jesus accepted his fate and carried the cross to his death, dying for his people. Mc Murphy, following in Jesus footsteps, realized his time had come and accepted his fate and fell asleep into the state of a Vegetable for his fellow patients, his followers, his friends. Even after his death, Mc Murphy s resemblance to Jesus continues. Jesus friends could not bear to see the sight of their loved one suffering and took him down from the cross to have him buried.

Similarly, Chief Bromden cannot bear to see Mc Murphy in his vegetative condition and ends his suffering. Although Mc Murphy died, he will not be forgotten by the patients of the combine. He entered the ward with a room full of unnerved insane strangers molded by the power of Big Nurse, and made them feel comfortable with themselves, each other and their surroundings. And even though he suffered great consequences for his actions, he managed to defy Nurse Ratched and resist her control giving the combine a chance to experience a life with no boundaries. Jesus Christ opened the gates of Heaven for his people so that they may live eternally. Mc Murphy opened a new door for the patents, giving them new life and a sense of joy and acceptance.
