Cat " sCats Cradle Kurt Vonnegut: Cat's Cradle The book is about an author named Jonah who collects material for a book called The day the world ended. This book should be an account of what important Americans had done when the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. So he contacts Newt Hoenikker the youngest of the three children of Dr. Felix Hoenikker, the father of the atomic bomb. After they wrote each other a few letters Jonah decides to meet Dr. Breed, vice-president of the General Forge and Foundry Company where Felix has worked.
After a while Breed throws him out because he's of the opinion that Jonah is just a member of the yellow press. That's because he asks only questions about a stuff called ICE- 09; the last unknown gift of Dr. Hoenikker to the world before he died, which learns water to freeze without cold! Because of nobody really knows if ICE- 09 really exists the storys about it are very interesting for sensation-seeking journalists. A few days later he found out that the third child of Dr. Hoenikker Franklin Hoenikker, everyone thought dead, was still alive and now the Minister of Science and Progress in the republic of San Lorenzo.
A small island ruled by Papa Monzano a doctor. As it was supposed to happen, Jonah was assigned by a magazine to do a story about Julian Castle; a man who followed the example of Albert Schweizer by founding a free hospital in a jungle in San Lorenzo. This country has his own religion Bokonism (invented by a immigrant named Bokonon) The only Problem is that Monzano has forbidden Bokonism and if someone is court while practicing this religion is punished with death penalty. What nobody knows is that ICE- 09 really exists and it is here on earth!
When Dr. Hoenikker died his three children divided up the worlds supply of ICE- 09. Angela Hoenikker gave her chip of ICE- 09 to her husband who has a firm which has something to do with war, so the USA had ICE- 09. Because of a curious incident Newt Hoenikker lost his chip of ICE- 09 to a russian spy! So the russians had ICE- 09 to!
And Franklin Hoenikker bought himself the job as the minister in San Lorenzo with ICE- 09. When Jonah arrived in San Lorenzo Papa Monzano comit's suicide with ICE- 09 after he had a stroke. In San Lorenzo Jonah gets to know Mona the daughter of Monzano who teaches him Bokonism and finally he becomes a Bokonism himself. A few days later Frank Hoenikker convinces Jonah to become the next president of San Lorenzo. During an air show for the new president, whose identity was still kept secret, one plane crashes directly into the castle where Papa Monzano has died because of ICE- 09 and so parts of the castle fall down the cliffs into the sea...
including the corps of Monzano which is infected with ICE- 09 When the corps dived into the water the whole sea began to freeze and then all the rivers which fall into into the sea and then all the lakes and then. When Jonah opened his eyes again all the world was frozen and the sky was darkened. It was winter now and forever Opinion: The main thing that makes the book so exciting is that secret stuff ICE- 09! There is one sentence that makes you go on reading till the end of the book and when you finished you flake back to read it again. But what Dr. Breed didn't know was that ICE- 09 really existed and that is was here on earth!
Before that sentence the book is a little bit like a bad detective-story lulling, but after the conversation between Jonah and Dr. Breed you really want to know how the book ends but you also know that it won't be a happy end at all! and you " re right with that
