The Hound of The Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a mystery that takes place in London and the Baskerville Hall in Devonshire. Sherlock Holmes is a private detective who along with his assistant Dr. Watson solve the death of Sir Charles Baskerville and the attempted murder of Sr. Henry Baskerville.

Other main characters are the care takers of Baskerville Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore, the amateur astronomer and fan of British Law, Mr. Franklin. Mr. Stapleton who knows the moor better than anyone and his sister Mrs.

Stapleton who Sir Henry falls in love with also play important parts. Dr. Mortimer is another main character who is a friend and doctor to the late Sir Charles Baskerville. Dr. Mortimer visits Holmes with concern about Sir Henry Baskerville inheriting Baskerville Hall. Sir Henry receives a cut out message warning him to stay away from the moor.

A savage hound is said to live there. While Dr. Mortimer, Sir Henry Baskerville, Dr. Watson, and Holmes, visit they are followed by a bearded man. Sir Henry has two different boots stolen. After arriving at the hall Sir Henry meets Mrs.

Stapleton and falls in love with her. Watson was sent along with Sir. Henry to check out the neighbors and the place in general. Mrs. Stapleton is afraid of her brother and warns Sir Henry to go back to London. Dr.

Watson finds out there is an escaped murderer on the moor who turns out to be Mrs. Barrymore s brother. Barrymore tells Watson about a letter Sir Charles got from a lady by the initials L. L. It turns out to be Laura Lyons, Mr.

Franklin s daughter, who wanted Sir. Charles help to pay for a divorce. Stapleton, whose sister is really his wife, said he would marry her. Holmes discovers that Stapleton is second in line to inheriting the Baskerville Hall.

He had his name changed. He knew Sir Charles had a heart condition and was very superstitious so he brought a huge black hound to the moor. He painted the dog s muzzle and around his eyes with phosphorus to make them glow in the dark. Holmes also went secretly to Devonshire to study the case for himself. He had figured out that Stapleton was the bearded man in London that had stolen Sir Henry s boot. He would use this boot to give the hound Sir Henry s scent.

Holmes has Sir Henry walk home alone from the Stapleton's in order to get Stapleton to set the hound loose on him. Stapleton thinks Holmes and Watson have returned to London. Holmes and Watson end up following, killing the hound. They find Mrs.

Stapleton tied up in the house because Stapleton was afraid she would warn Sir Henry about his plan. Stapleton tries to escape through the moor, but a heavy fog causes him to lose his way and fall into the mire. Sherlock Holmes uses four steps in his methodology of deduction in solving crimes. First he observes the scene of the crime and everyone involved. Sending Watson out he sends out for a large scaled map of the moor showing Baskerville Hall in the middle and its surrounding neighbors. He did a background check on Stapleton when he read on Watson s report that Stapleton used to be a school master.

This was how he found out he had changed his name. Holmes would also use incorrect guesses by Watson to guide his deduction. Watson guessed that Mr. Mortimer s walking stick with the engraving, Friends of C. C. H.

probably came from the local hunt organization. Holmes deducts it more likely came from Charing Cross Hospital since they think he was a country doctor. In his third step, he makes a guess on what happened and who might have caused it. When he was observing the note left to Sir Henry at the hotel made from cut out words, he smelled perfume and so deducted it came from a lady. Later after reading Watson s reports and investigating himself he was led to believe it came from Mrs. Stapleton.

Last of all, his guess of what happened would show him which way to investigate further. Since the note appeared to come from Mrs. Stapleton, Holmes investigated why she would warn Sir Henry to not go near the moor and also what role her brother might play. This book is hard to follow with all the characters and action, but it shows how the little things once put together solve the crime as a whole.
